Wartrace Regulators 12/3/11 Cowboy Match

30 Cowgirls and Cowboys came to Wartrace to enjoy the fantastic December weather and shoot our match. Whiskey Hayes, as always, wrote some fun stages. We had enough movement to keep it interesting but without feeling like you had run a marathon.

We shot pistols at each window, then shotgun at each window in Graftons. At Wells Fargo we started inside, carried gold nuggets outside and shot pistols, went back inside for the rifle and ended up with 6 shotgun kd's. We also shot from 2 locations at the Gallows and the Train. The KO Corral was the only "Stand and Deliver" stage, but we started with the shotgun on a clay tosser and clay then alternated between a rifle target and the Texas Star before finishing with pistols.

I had to work in the morning and got to the range about noon and I have to thank all the cowboys and cowgirls for letting me jump back and forth between posses and shoot through. This year I've had to shoot through more times than not and I appreciate every one's patience with me.

Will Reilly was the Top Gun of the day followed by Randy Saint Eagle, Papa Dave, CW Knight and Whiskey Hayes rounded out the Top 5.

We always like to congratulate those who shoot "Clean Matches" , this match we had 3, Fort Knox, Whiskey Hayes and Randy Saint Eagle. This was my first clean match at Wartrace and only my second of the year.

Wartrace November Cowboy/ Wild Bunch Match

25 Cowboys, Cowgirls and Wild Bunch shooters came out to take advantage of really good November weather. The morning started out cool but we got up to the upper 60's. We had a pretty stiff breeze but it was a good day.

Latigo Jim had a brief safety meeting and Sergeant Shooter offered a prayer and led us in the pledge.

We had one Cowboy Posse and one combined Cowboy/ Wild Bunch Posse. The Cowboys and Cowgirls shot the same scenarios we shot at the Main November Match including pulling shotshells out of a bucket you had to carry to each location. We also had to run from the fence to the pump at the corral before shooting at a Buffalo on the hill, a clay bird and the Texas Star.

The Wild Bunch had less gimicks and movement but shot more pistol rounds so the Overall times were close together.

CW Knight was the Wild Bunch Top Gun, followed by Frank Buckshot, Papa Dave, Papa Oso, Deadwood Miner and Tom Horn. CW Knight and Papa Oso also shot "Clean" matches.

Sergeant Shooter was the Cowboy Top Gun, followed by Dusty Wilcox, Sheriff Frank Canton, Wes Outlaw and Imis Twohofon rounded out the Top 5. Sergeant Shooter and Sheriff Frank Canton also shot "Clean" matches.

I hope everyone had as much fun as I did. I shot my first match as a Gunfighter and while I didn't shoot real well I had lots of fun. The Gunfighters don't have to worry (or laugh) I'm not changing Categories, just playing.

November Cowboy Match

We had great weather for the Wartrace November Cowboy Match, cool in the morning and sunny and warm by mid-day. Whiskey Hayes took advantage of the good forecast and wrote some really fun stages. He added a little movement since we finally got out of the abusive heat. 38 Cowboys and Cowgirls came out to join in the fun.

At the Outlaw Cabin we started in the center then move to one side to shoot the rifle, the other side for the shotgun and back to the center for the pistols.

At the Cemetery we started at the wheelbarrow shooting the pistols, moved to a coffin to shoot the rifle and back to the wheelbarrow for the shotgun.

The Depot added the challenge of having to retrieve your shotgun shells from a bucket you had to carry from the starting position to each shooting position.

The KO Corral was a real hoot, you started with your back against the fence, gun order was shooters choice except rifle couldn't be shot last. With pistols put 5 shots each on 2 targets, Rifle, 5 shots each on a large square and the Buffalo on the hill (those who shot the Team Match at the State Championship will remember the Buffalo on the hill), rifle and pistol were both shot from the pump. The real fun came with the shotgun, shot from the trough, first you shot the clay tosser then the clay (with a KD target to shoot in case you missed the clay) next you cleaned the Texas Star. We don't get to shoot 7+ shot shells on a stage very often. This was a long stage to shoot and to reset but it sure was fun.

At Fort Sweeney you started at the window, shot pistols outside,outside,inside,inside,then 6 shots on the center target. Move left to the platform, shoot the same sequence with the rifle and then engage the 6 KD targets with the shotgun.

I worked that morning and got to the range at noon and both posses were kind enough to let let me jump in and shoot through. I was able the finish out the last 2 stages with the same posse.

Buck Dodgers was the Top Gun of the day followed by Will Reilly, Sergeant Shooter, Papa Dave and Randy Saint Eagle rounded out the top 5.

Also congratulations to Emmett Moon,Papa Oso, Sergeant Shooter and Will Reilly for shooting "Clean Matches".

Smokeout in the Hills 2011 Possum Trott

Dobber, Branchwater Jack and I left last Thursday and headed to The Smokeout In The Hills at Possum Trott to meet up with our cabin mate, Buck D Law.

Also from Wartrace were Blue Boy, Imis Twohofon, Blackwater Desperado, Hatfield.

This was my 3rd trip to Possum Trot and I believe it was the best one I've been to. Thursday night had Jambalaya and a Poker Tournament. Friday morning started with a breakfast of country ham, eggs, bisquits, gravy and fried apples.

The Long Range Side Matches ran from 8:30 till noon and Dobber and I tried some of them. Dobber won one of the 200 yard rifle events and I won the long range smokeless pistol match.

After lunch we had the regular Speed side matches plus Ringers Humdinger which covered 3 stages 8 guns and was a ball.

Friday night brought out the Chili Cook-off (which was also part of supper), the best Home Brew Contest, Liars Contest and the Pie Eating Contest which for the first time was won by a Lady, congratulations to Tequila Liz.

Saturday morning brought the start of the Main Match and Posse 2 with Cheyenne Culpepper as Posse Marshall had more fun than was believed possible. We had the Honor of having Blue Boy, the oldest active competitor in SASS, on our Posse. I can't remember but I believe Blue Boy is 92 or 93 and still has a good time shooting. Posse 2 also had our share of Category Winners, 8 winners out of 16 posse members.

I usually don't try to name all the posse members for fear of leaving someone out but we had so much fun I'm going to try. I apologize in advance if I forget anyone.

Shooting smokeless were Tequila Liz, Luscious Liza, Speedy Fredrico (1st Elder Statesman), Blue Boy ( oldest active competitor in SASS) and Long Wolf.

Shooting black powder were Imis Twohofon, Dobber, Kirk (1st 49r), Branchwater Jack, Witch Doctor (1st Ladies Senior), Ole Saddlebags (1st Wrangler), Randy Saint Eagle (1st Duelist), Mckensie River Drifter (1st Elder Statesman), Pig Iron Lane (1st Senior), Cheyenne Culpepper (1st Frontier Cartridge Gunfighter) and Fast Eddie.

Saturday night we feasted on Copperhead Joe's fish receipe that is bound to win the Parking Lot War at Comin' At Cha. It was some fine fish. After that we were treated to a great concert from Blackwater Desperado and Milkbone and as usual they do Southern Rock proud.

Sunday brought Cowboy Church with Cree Vicar Dave and his wife. We had a good service and got to hear Dave play his new Mandolin.

After Church we finished the final 4 stages and then feasted on a lunch of everything that was left over, if we'd had a couple more days there I'd have to buy new pants. Thanks to Baby Bull and Miss Julia for the fine breakfasts and to everyone who helped feed us so well.

After lunch Ringer had the scores together and Copperhead Joe passed out the awards.

Silver City Rebel was the Top Cowboy followed by Fast Eddie, Copperhead Joe, Cheyenne Culpepper and Pig Iron Lane rounded out the Top 5. Anita Marguarita was the Top Cowgirl.

Also congratulations to Hatfield and Ole Saddlebags, the only ones to shoot a Clean Match.

They also gave away free 14 entries to matches, Branchwater Jack won one to The Midwest Classic and I won one to The Georgia State Championship.

While this was a Great Match it was also a sad one as we learned this will be the last Smokeout at Possum Trott. Next year look for the Smokeout at Copperhead Joe's Range.

2011 Tennessee SASS State Championship

The Wartrace Regulators hosted the 8th Regulators Reckoning, The Tennessee State Championship Oct. 6-8.

157 Cowgirls and Cowboys from 12 states were treated to FANTASTIC weather. The Lord blessed us with better weather than we could have asked for.

Thursday started out with the usual Side Matches, but with some new winners including
Marshal WD.

Friday morning started with Whiskey Hayes welcoming everyone and telling about the match.

Papa Dave gave the Safety Meeting and Charlie Bowdre gave thanks and then led us in the Pledge Of Allegiance.

We shot the first 5 stages either on the Hill or in the Old Town depending on which posse you were on. Whiskey Hayes wrote some fast and interesting stages with no "P" traps in any of them. When you look at the scores you'll see how fast they actually were.

After the 5 Main Match stages were finished we had a Team Match consisting of 3 person teams shooting the Texas Star with a rifle, pistol and shotgun knock downs and a clay bird. The teams were drawn from a hat so it made it very interesting. 10 teams tried it and the winning team consisted of Duck River, Sgt. Shooter and Ruff Edge.

This was followed by dinner on the range prepared by Rollin' Chopstix and it was as good a meal on a range as I have ever had. They were also our food vendor for the entire weekend including breakfast, pancakes and country ham on the range are hard to beat.

After dinner we had the Side Match Awards and Dooley Gang inspired high speed tag team door prize drawings. Thanks to sponsors, vendors and prize contributors we handed out well over 100 door prizes. I might have even seen lots of Jack Daniels.

Next up was Chickamauga Slim and Karaoke. I heard some pretty good singing including Charlie Bowdre. When I left the karaoke was still going with a group of cowboys singing, last I heard they were still trying to come up with a name. I kind of like Buck and the Dodgers.

Saturday morning brought the final 5 stages of the match and the weather was just as Great as the first 2 days. I was able to take some videos on Saturday and got to see some fantastic shooting. Saturday night brought what I believe is one of the Best Awards Banquets in all of CAS. The food was great as usual and this year they did some rearranging so it wasn't crowded like last year. Whiskey Hayes gave away two guns donated by Ruger, our Main Match Sponsor.

First in the Awards we gave buckles to all the Category State Champions, then we sent them to see Mose and Bella. If you haven't heard the IDNR (Illinois Dept. of Natural Resources) is giving every SASS Category State Champion a free entry to the 2012 US Open. Mose and Bella are handling this and it looks like it will be the largest Cowboy Action Shooting Match in the World. Next we passed out the plaques to the Top 5 shooters in each Category, and then the Top Guns.

Prestidigitator was the Top Gun and Dew R Dye was the Top Lady.

The Top 10 were Tator, Silver City Rebel, Duke Skywalker, Fast Eddie, Mose Spencer, Dew R Dye, Knob Creek Drover, Buck Dodgers, Shell Stuffer and Risin' Outlaw.

Rockcastle Rangers Sept. Match

Papa Dave, Sheriff Frank Canton and I headed north to spend the day with The Rockcastle Rangers. Also making the trip were Buck Dodgers, Tombstone John, Will Reilly, CW Knight, Randy Atcher and Tom Horn.

This was my first trip to this range since spring and Shaddai and the Rangers have done a lot of work since then. The range is really looking good.

After a Safety Meeting, Prayer and Pledge 25 Cowboys and Cowgirls shot 3 stages before a free lunch the the final 3 stages. The stages were some I've not shot before and they made you think. 2 of the stages were very similar, but opposite so I was glad one was our first stage and the other was our last.

I enjoyed the Stages even though I had to think. Sometimes I think we get so used to ordinary stages we don't have to think much.

I finally broke my 13 month streak and shot a "Clean" match, but not without some help from Shaddai to keep me from getting a "P" on the last stage.

Dusty Walker was the Top Gun, and also shot "Clean" , followed by Buck Dodgers, Campo Kid, Black Tom and Cumberland Drifter rounded out the Top 5.

The Rangers also have a new Website. and I think the scores will be posted on that sight.

2011 SASS US Open

Buck Dodgers drove the Stage Coach to the US Open and hauled Papa Dave, Sheriff Frank Canton, Tombstone John and Randy Saint Eagle. We went up on Wednesday and got a good spot to park our equipment trailer and checked out the range. We met up with CW Knight, Branchwater Jack, Jailbreak Jake, Blackwater Desperado and Hatfield.

It was my, along with several others, first trip to this range and I was impressed. You could tell Mose, Bella, The Kaskaskie Cowboys, The Dooley Gang and IDNR (Illinois Department of Natural Resources) had really been working hard.

This Match was all inclusive which I really like. It even included a Dooley Gang Shooting School with T-Bone, Nuttin' Graceful, my pard, Ringo (By Gawd) Fire, Copperhead Joe, Stormy Shooter and a Buckaroo named Rattlesnake Wrangler (you'll hear that name a lot in the future). We had a great time, I feel like I learned a lot and did I mention it was FREE.

There was plenty to do every day from morning till late night. Did I mention this range is on 1600 acres with over 1000 RV hookups and 3.5 miles of trap fields if wanted to try it.

Thursday after the Shooting School we burned up lots of ammo at the Side Matches and Buck Dodgers won the Double Barrel Shotgun Speed Match and with a faster time than Copperhead Joe who won the 97 Event. Rattlesnake Wrangler won the Speed Rifle with a 2.96 and Prestidigitator won the Speed Pistol, Missouri Lefty (another Buckaroo) and Rattlesnake Wrangler tied .01 seconds behind Tator.

The Main Match started on Friday morning with 5 stages followed by the Team Side Match. Papa Dave, Sheriff Frank, Tombstone John and I shot on Team 10 and had a ball. This was a 3 Stage Match that started with a clay bird flurry, 24 birds thrown up from 3 different machines and they counted the unbroken ones that hit the ground. Our team let 6 get to the ground. Each of the other 2 stages had part of the team shooting at clay birds, it was great fun.

Friday night we had a dinner and Side Match Awards. Branchwater Jack placed in both the Black Powder and the Wild Bunch Matches.

Saturday we finished the last 5 Main Match stages. All 10 stages were interesting and fun to shoot. Posse 3 with Sgt. Eli as Posse Marshall had to have been the best Posse. Everyone worked, the Posse ran smooth and both days we were finished shooting by 1:30.

Papa Dave and I stayed at the range and watched the Top Gun Shoot off (anyone who wanted to could shoot in it). It was probably the first ever all Clay Bird Shoot off in SASS. Each shooter had 24 stationary clay birds spread out in stands they had to shoot with their revolvers and rifle before grabbing their shotgun and cleaning up whatever was left. After all birds were broken they ran to the center of the stage and shot a stop plate. Tator was the Top Gun and Sixgun Sallie was the Top Lady shooter.

At the Awards Dinner on Saturday night we got some of the most exciting news in SASS.

[SASS Wire Post] Sparta Illinois loves cowboy action shooting!!!! The IDNR (Illinois Department of Natural Resources) formally announced on September 10th, 2011, at the SASS U.S. Open awards banquet, that they would like to honor all champions across the United States. In doing so, the IDNR will pay for every Resident champion, in every category, and from each state-level and above a free match entry to the 2012 SASS U.S. Open.

That’s right!! You read it right and heard it right!! If you’d been at the banquet you would have heard the IDNR representatives announce it personally. This is for cowboy action shooting only (no certificates will be awarded for mounted, wild bunch, black powder, or other club events).

Ocoee Rangers 8/27/11

Papa Dave, Sheriff Frank Canton, Buck Dodgers and I decided to head east to the Ocoee Rangers for the "Return Of The Black Hat". "We Reckon There's Going To Be A Gunfight" and we didn't want to miss it. Unpleasant wrote some good stages and we got to shoot on the Pleasantly Unpleasant Posse. Posse 5 ran smooth and the only problems we had were several gun and ammo malfunctions. Several shooters got re-shoots including me.

The weather was great that morning but warmed up by afternoon, but it was still better than most we've had this summer. These were really fast and fun stages, the Top 5 Shooters all had times under 100 seconds. Being the tightwad that I am and wanting to get more for my money I took a little more time (if you believe that I've got some oceanfront property for sale in Middle Tenn.).

The Top Gun and Favorite B-Western Cowboy was Marshall WD, followed by his dad, Clancy O'Conall, Ruff Edge, Copperhead Joe and Marshall Too Tall rounded out the Top 5.

If you're in driving distance of the Chattanooga check out this club, you won't be disappointed.

Wartrace August 2011 Cowboy/Wild Bunch Match

It was a really hot day for a Cowboy Shoot, did I mention it was mid-August in the south. 27 Cowboys and Wild Bunch shooters came out and tried to brave the heat, however by the end of the match it was touch and go.

I had to work but I came to the range to take a few pictures and got there just in time, to time the last 4 or 5 Cowboy shooters, the Wild Bunch Posse had already finished. A few cowboys had to get in the shade and they were running out of workers.

Everyone survived the heat and Sgt. Shooter (cowboy) was the "Top Gun" of the day, followed by Moon (Wild Bunch), Branchwater Jack (Wild Bunch), Tombstone John (cowboy) and Charlie Bowdre (cowboy) rounded out the "Top 5".

It must have been the heat, because no one shot a "Clean Match".

8/6/11 Wartrace Regulators Cowboy Match

43 Cowboys and Cowgirls came to Wartrace to brave the heat and help defend Wartrace from all manner of miscreants and thugs. This month we shot at the "Line Shack", "Cemetery", "Fort Sweeney", "KO Corral" and for the first time in the new berms, "The Wagon".

It was overcast all day so the temperature stayed down but the humidity was so high it felt like you could cut the air with a knife. We got to the last few shooters on the last stage before the rain started, but it was light enough it felt pretty good to me.

When the smoke had cleared Campo Kid was the Top Gun of the day (he is starting to make a habit of this, and I hope he continues), followed by Papa Dave ( who is always ready to ponce if you make any mistakes), Buck Dodgers, Vaquero Jake and CW Knight rounds out the Top 5. I find it interesting that a Junior won followed by an Elder Statesman, Wrangler, another Junior and a Senior, I think that is a pretty good mix. Next time we'll try to get a one-handed shooter in the Top 5.

Congratulations also to CW Knight, Campo Kid, Cherohala Chase, Cheyenne Thornton, Ida Shot'em and Tom Horn for all shooting "Clean ".

I took a few Videos with my still camera to try it out. They aren't too good but they are watchable. I hit a wrong key and wasn't able to get captions on all of them, one day I'll figure this out.

Ocoee Rangers 7/23/11 Match

Papa Dave, Sheriff Frank Canton and I decided to head east, we heard there was going to be a "Gunfight". Papa Dave hitched up his wagon, we piled in our gear and headed out to the home of the Ocoee Rangers. When we arrived there was already a crowd gathering and sure enough it looked like there was going to be a gunfight.

We'd been hearing for awhile about Unpleasant's "Black Hat Stages", so we decided we ought to check them out. The crowd kept gathering, it looked like everybody had the same idea we did.

We ended up having 5 Posse's including a Ladies Only Posse, however I heard 1 of them ladies was right homely looking. It was really nice to see that many ladies shooting, at Wartrace we usually only have 1 or 2.

We were on Posse 2, Horseshoe John and Ocoee Red's Posse, with a good bunch of Cowboys and Cowgirl. The Black Hat Stages were as good and fast as we had heard. I think everyone there had a big time.

When all the smoke had cleared Papa Dave was the Top Gun of the day, followed by Unpleasant, Marshall W.D., Anita Margarita and Jackalope rounded out the Top 5. Papa Dave shot an awesome match and Anita summed it up well on the Ocoee Rangers Forum;

A man comes into town from out of the west, steely-eyed and well armed. We said "I reckon there's going to be a gunfight". And he proceeded to whup us all.

There were 78 shooters at this match and it ran like a well oiled machine.
I don't know about the other Posse's but we had 10 "Clean" shooters on our Posse.

It was really fun to see so many pards I hadn't seen in a while and to meet new friends. If you're in the Cleveland Tn. area on the 4th Saturday go by and visit the Ocoee Rangers, you'll be glad you did.

July 2nd Wartrace Regulators Cowboy Match

53 Cowboys and Cowgirls converged on Wartrace for our July Main Match. We were fortunate enough to have shooters from Alabama, Georgia and Kentucky as well as Tennessee join us. It was a great day (a little warm but much better than winter) with no rain to dampen any ones spirit.

Whiskey Hayes scaled back the movement again on the stages due to the expected hot weather. At the Gallows and Graftons we had minimal movement and only 2 shotgun knock downs at the Gallows. The Wells Fargo Bank and the Jail were both "Stand and Deliver" stages with 6 shotgun kd's at the bank. At the Depot we shot from both inside and outside.

They were some fast stages as evidenced by the fact that Campo Kid shot the 5 stage match in less than 85 seconds.

We had a few new shooters but I had to work in the morning and didn't catch all the names. I was also unable to take any pictures as I shot through once I got there.

Campo Kid was the Top Gun of the day, followed by Buck Dodgers, Randy Atcher, Sergeant Shooter and Lone Wolf Swain rounded out the Top 5.

I'd also like to congratulate Ben T Iron, Campo Kid, Cash Jackson, Deadwood Miner, Outcast, Randy Atcher, Sheriff Frank Canton and Sunflower Kid for all shooting "Clean Matches".

This past Friday the last and only-known picture of "Billy the Kid", which was an Upham Tin Type, Circa 1879-1880, sold at auction for $2.6 million. There were orginally four Tin Types Billy had made and gave to friends. The other three were all destroyed. I thought some of the cowboys and cowgirls would be interested in this information.

I am sorry to miss the July 2nd shoot. I'm waiting for cooler weather.

6/18/11 Wartrace Cowboy/Wild Bunch Match

35 Cowboys and Cowgirls came to Wartrace to help us defend our town. We shot at the Line Shack, Cemetery, Livery Stable, K O Corral and Fort Sweeney. As is our normal we shot the same stages as we did the first of the month with a few changes for the Wild Bunch Shooters.

We had 3 Cowboys and new Wartrace Regulators shooting their first match. It's great when new members shoot their first match.

It was a warm day, but a breeze and clouds kept it nice most of the day. It got pretty hot on a couple of stages and the Cowboy Posse got rained on at the last stage.

The Wild Bunch shooters shooting those new-fangled auto-loading pistols topped the Cowboy shooters today, but I think they are just a passing fad. I don't think that auto ever take the place of Sam Colt's Single Action Army revolver.

Papa Dave (on one foot) was the Top Gun of the Wild Bunch and the Overall Top Shooter. In the Wild Bunch Match Papa was followed by Sunflower Kid, Slim Jim Dandy, Cherohala Chase and Branchwater Jack rounded out the top 5 Wild Bunch. 7 of the overall top 10 were shooting Wild Bunch, The Cowboys want another rematch.

C W Knight was the Top Gun in the Cowboy Match, followed by Randy Saint Eagle, Sheriff Frank Canton, Latigo Jim and Dusty Wilcox rounded out the top 5 Cowboys.

Wartrace Regulators June Cowboy Match

Well it seemed more like late July or early August instead of early June but 39 Cowboys and Cowgirls braved the heat and came out to help Butch and Sundance get away from the Pinkertons at the Line Shack; Frank James fight off another Pinkerton at the Cemetery; Matt Dillon fight off drunk cowboys at the Livery; Jessee James fight off the Pinkertons at the Corral; and Major Crompton's recruits fight the Indians at the Fort.

Due to the excessive heat Whiskey Hayes rewrote the stages at the last minute to cut down on the time and movement required. Two were "Stand and Deliver" and three had some movement, none had more than 4 shotgun KD'S. It was a good fast match for a hot day. We also opted to have 3 small posses to make things move a little quicker. Everyone pitched in and helped with posse duties and we had a great match.

We had the pleasure of having the Rider Gang, Shotgun Rider, Lady Rider, Sunset Rider and Pony Rider, from East Tennessee join us for the first time. This is a really neat family and I hope they had a good time and will join us again. Also from East TN. Iron Maiden and Boondock Saint came to visit us again. Campo Kid and Lauren, his sister, came down from Kentucky to whoop up on the the Tennessee Cowboys and he did a good job of it. Campo is one GREAT Kid and comes from a Great family. I really enjoy watching him shoot. If you haven't seen him shoot, check out Campo Kid on You Tube.

Campo Kid was the Top Gun of the day with a 5 stage time of 88.19 (I told you he was impressive), followed by Buck Dodgers, Papa Dave, Latigo Jim (it was good to have Latigo back shooting with us) and Whiskey Hayes rounded out the top 5. Great shooting guys!

Congratulations also to Ben Uriah, Buck Dodgers, Cash Jackson and Dobber for shooting "Clean Matches".

May Mid-Month Cowboy/Wild Bunch

10 Cowboys and Cowgirls and 10 Wild Bunch shooters had a great day of shooting. The weather was fantastic and I think everyone had a ball.

With only 10 each we had to have 1 big Posse. The scenarios were slightly different so the Cowboys and Cowgirls shot first on each stage while the Wild Bunchers worked, then we read the scenario for Wild Bunch and they shot while the Cowboy Posse worked. This worked well but made the day a little long.

We shot the same stages as the May Main Match. They were fast and fun with no "P" traps, even though I got one (brain fade).

I had a ball and I hope everyone else did. We were excited to have one new Cowboy shooter, Brad Manco, and his wife and soon to be shooter, Dora Dufran. They are also new Wartrace Regulators. We also gained 3 more new Regulators, Montana Duke, Dynamite Jim and Tioga Roy, please welcome these new Cowboys and Cowgirl when you meet them.

Papa Dave was the Top Gun for the day shooting Wild Bunch, followed by Scattergun Kid {Cowboy}, C.W. Knight {WB}, Sheriff Frank Canton {CB} and Cherohala Chase {WB} rounded out the top 5. I thought it was interesting that the top 6 alternated Wild Bunch then Cowboy.
But I have to admit the Pards with them "New Fangled" guns topped the Cowboys this day but we want a rematch next month.

Congratulations also have to go out to Ida Shot'em, Dusty Wilcox and Dobber (shooting black powder) for shooting "clean" matches.

2011 Georgia State Championship

I got word back from some Regulators, that at The Last Stand, Witch Doctor said that I had better be at the Georgia State Match "or else". Well not knowing what the "or else" was I decided, along with several Wartrace Regulators to head south and see what this ruckus was all about.

8 Wartrace Regulators made the trip, after checking out Boarding Houses and seeing they were all 30 minutes or longer to the range, Buck Dodgers sent up some smoke signals and sent a few telegraphs to see if we could find a Bunk House closer to the range. All his work paid off and we found a little Bunk House within 20 minutes of the range.

Papa Dave, Sheriff Frank Canton, Tombstone John, Branchwater Jack, Cheyenne Thornton, Buck Dodgers and I (Randy Saint Eagle) were joined by a friend from Florida, Amaduelist, at this little 5 bedroom 4 1/2 bath bunk house. Blackwater Desperado was also at the match but stayed at a different location.

Papa Dave, Sheriff Frank, Branchwater and Amaduelist got to the range early to shoot either the Wild Bunch Match or the Black Powder Match. Buck, Cheyenne, Tombstone and I got there in time to shoot the afternoon Side Matches. They had to normal speed side matches plus one of the most fun side matches I've ever tried. The entire match was based on Clint Eastwood movies and if you're a fan, you remember him shooting the Hangman's rope into to save Tuco.

This was set up where to save Tuco you had to shoot a 1/4" rope into at about 9 to 10 yards away. I'll tell you with old eyes it's hard to see that little rope. If you cut the rope it would fly up into the air so you knew right away you got it. If you saved Tuco you were given a button that said "I saved Tuco" and a piece of the rope. Mine took a place with all my badges from other shoots. Buck Dodgers turned out to be the King of rope cutting in our group. Buck cut it with his rifle and 3 different pistols, a Blackhawk, Vaquero and a Bisley.

Friday morning after the introduction, safety meeting, prayer and pledge we started the main match. We were on Posse 4 and what a great posse it turned out to be. Everyone worked and our posse ran like a well oiled machine. Buck Dodgers and Papa Dave were our Posse Marshalls and did an excellent job.

The stages were set up well and the targets big enough and close enough. Several of the stages had enough movement to keep it fun and you had to think on some to keep the shooting order straight. Several were shooters choice on gun order (rifle can't be last) and none had any "P" traps. You could tell it was a straight forward match by the fact out of 179 shooters 42 shot "Clean".

After shooting the first 5 stages they had Couples and Team matches. I had lots of fun shooting a team match with Olin Winchester (current World Champion Buckaroo) and his little brother, Joe Cartwheel. These are 2 fine shooters and you can expect to hear their names frequently.

I also got to shoot on a team with Cassalong Hoppidy and Deadly Sharpshooter, 2 more fine shooters and a lot of fun to Posse with.

Then we had a great meal prepared by the Mule Camp Cowboys with money collected going to help Storm Victims.

On Saturday we shot the last 5 stages and they were just as much fun as the first 5. Posse 4 consisted of Amaduelist, Big Boyd, Blackwater Desperado, Blaze Dawson, Branchwater Jack, Briscoe Callaghan, Buck Dodgers, Cassalong Hopidy, Cheyenne Thornton, Colt McCloud, Deadly Sharpshooter, Sheriff Frank Canton, Papa Dave, Purly, Randy Saint Eagle and Tombstone John.

This is how the Wartrace Regulators finished;

Papa Dave 1st Elder Statesman 23rd Overall

2011 Tennessee Wild Bunch State Championship

The Wartrace Regulators hosted the first and only 5 Stage Tennessee Wild Bunch State Championship today. It seems after this Match was approved the rules changed and now in order to have a State Championship it must be at least 10 stages.

The weather was great and Whiskey Hayes wrote some really good stages. None had less than 15 pistol rounds fired and 3 of them had 20 pistol rounds. No "Stand and Deliver" all had movement. I think everyone got in plenty of shooting for a 5 stage match.

I had to work this morning and got there just as they were finishing up Stage 3. This still gave me time to take plenty of pictures and a few videos (with Duck River's phone).

We offered 12 age-based categories instead of the normal 4 .

Category Winners:

Wes Outlaw Modern Male 45 & under

Frank Buckshot Modern Male 46-60

C. W. Knight Modern Male 61 & over

Branchwater Jack Traditional Male 45 & under

Duck River Traditional Male 46-60

Papa Dave Traditional Male 61 & over

We had no Lady shooters today.

Top Modern shooter was CW Knight

Top Traditional Shooter was Duck River and

Top Gun Overall was Duck River

2nd Overall was Capt. Jo Walker, followed by Papa Dave, CW Knight and Frank Buckshot rounded out the Top 5.

Papa Oso shot the only "Clean Match" of the day.

To me it was interesting and surprising that the Top 3 shooters were shooting Traditional.

I'd like to thank Coyote Claxton for coming down from Michigan to shoot with us and hope he and his lovely bride can make it back to our Cowboy State Championship in October.

After the awards we were treated to a great lunch prepared by Lucy Delight and Babs.

4/22/11 Rock Castle Rangers Match

Papa Dave hitched up his wagon and drove the team by my spread. We loaded my gear (the bare minimum) and headed over to L.A. (Lower Antioch) to pick up Sheriff Frank Canton. We then headed to the Stage Depot in Portland where we loaded the Stage with Buck Dodgers driving and headed up to Park City, KY to the Rock Castle Rangers range. We met up with fellow Wartrace Regulators; Imis Twohofon, Sergeant Shooter, Blackwater Desperado, and Hatfield to try to help the Rangers clean up their town. It was like Old Friends Day as we met up with many old friends and made more new friends while there.

Shaddai Vaquero, Perfecto Vaquera and Vaquero Jake put on a great shoot. We had 6 fast , fun stages with enough movement to keep it interesting. They've done a lot of work in a short time on this new range and it is really shaping up.

We shot 3 stages and broke for lunch (included), then finished up the final 3. Perfecto shot early on the last stage, then tallied the scores and printed out awards. Not long after the guns were put away Shaddai started the awards ceremony. This was my first trip to the Rock Castle Rangers home but I don't plan on it being my last, they did a great job and are well on there way to having a First Class Range.

Campo Kid was the Top Gun for the day and man can this kid shoot, 6 stages in 115.62 seconds. Black Tom was second followed by Buck Dodgers (1.58 sec. between them), then Cumberland Drifter and Dusty Walker rounded out the top 5. I have to say the closest match of the day was in the Duelist Category .04 sec. between Shaddai Vaquero and Randy Saint Eagle.

Perfecto Vaquera has to be Congratulated as the only person to shoot a "Clean Match".

If you are looking for a place to shoot on the 4th Saturday, give the Rock Castle Rangers a try, you won't be disappointed.

Wartrace Regulators April 2 Cowboy Match

It has been a long cold Winter and God Blessed us with a beautiful day, and 67 Cowboys and Cowgirls took advantage of it. We had cowboys from Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi and a few of our East Tennessee pards joined us in a day of trying to keep Blue Boy out of trouble.

Before the Safety Meeting Papa Dave gave out Award Certificates from our last match. I gave out a special Award to the Wartrace Regulator who shot the most "Clean Matches" in 2010. That Award went to Deadwood Miner. When I started searching the match results to see who our winner was, I discovered that I had "O" Clean Matches at Wartrace in 2010, so far 2011 is not looking any better.

After the Awards were finished Papa Dave had a brief Safety Meeting and Sergeant Shooter offered a prayer and led us in the Pledge.

Whiskey wrote some fun and fast stages including the Corral with a rifle and a pistol knock down as well as a clay bird to shoot. We also shot the Line Shack, Cemetery, Livery Stable and Fort Sweeney. We had 4 posses, I was on posse 2 and I have to thank everyone for making our posse so much fun. Everyone worked and made for a smooth running posse. We had the pleasure of having 2 East Tennessee Gunfighters on our posse, we don't have many Gunfighters shoot with us and they are fun to watch. I also have to thank Yak for bringing Campo Kid down to shoot with us, this Junior shooter is fast and a great person.

Papa Dave was our Top Gun for the day, followed by Campo Kid, Sean Clancy O'Conall, Buck Dodgers and Marshall W.D. rounded out the Top 5. I think it is interesting that we had an Elder Statesman 1st, a Junior 2nd and had 9 Categories represented in the Top 10. I think that proves, at least at Wartrace, that no one Category has the best shooters.

As always I'd also like to congratulate the shooters who shot "Clean Matches"; Birdgun Quail, Buxom Boo, Col. John W. Reed, Moon, Papa Dave, Papa Oso and Sean Clancy O'Conall.

I'd also like to welcome our newest Wartrace Regulator Buffalo Red Rock.

Wartrace Regulators Wild Bunch/ Cowboy Match 3.19.11

14 Wild Bunch Shooters and 21 Cowboys and Cowgirls came out for a fantastic day of shooting. The weather was great, a little cool early but nice by the time we started shooting. As always Whiskey wrote some fast and fun stages .

We shot a Lawrence Welk Sweep at the Gallows, which took a little explaining to make sure everyone understood. While this looks complicated when you first read it, it's not bad a lot of fun once you get it in your head. (1,12,123,1234). Buck Dodgers blazed that stage in 18.01. At Grafton's, one of 3 stages that the gun order was shooters choice, we had a 5 shot sweep from each direction. Wells Fargo was shot with single tap's on the center targets and double taps on each of the 2 outside targets. The Depot's target arrangement looked like a 5 domino and you single tapped each corner target double tapped the center and single tapped each corner again. At the Jail we shot the rifle and pistols through the bars in the cell and the shotgun from the table outside. We had double tap the outside targets, single tap the center target, double tap the inside targets and single tap the center. Sergeant Shooter topped this stage with a 22.89.

Buck Dodgers was the Top Gun for the Cowboys with a total time of just 118.41 seconds, just under 2 minutes shooting for the whole day. Sergeant Shooter was 2nd, followed by Randy Saint Eagle, Imis Twohofon and Sheriff Frank Canton rounded out the top 5.

The Wild Bunch shooters shot basically the same stages except they shot quite a few more pistol rounds, if you really want to shoot a lot you might consider trying the Wild Bunch Match.

Duck River was the Wild Bunch Top Gun with a total time of 208.45. Papa Dave was 2nd, followed by Deadwood Miner, C W Knight and Branchwater Jack rounded out the Top 5 Wild Bunch.

Congratulations to Papa Oso for shooting the Wild Bunch Match "Clean". I didn't get a report on the Cowboy shooters so I don't know if anyone was "Clean".

I'd like to welcome some new members Ida Shot'em, our only Lady shooter Saturday, who just moved here from Washington State (I think) and Dusty Wilcox who also shot his 1st match with us. Kellertown Kid didn't shoot but came to check everything out and hopes to shoot with us in 2 weeks. It was good to see new member Doc Blackburn back for his second match, just a week after surgery.

We'd like to thank all the Alabama bunch, including Dusty Dan on his 1st trip to Wartrace, for joining us.

Cowboy/Wild Bunch Match 2/19/11

27 Cowboys, Cowgirls and 18 Wild Bunch Shooters converged on Wartrace today to try to shake out the cobwebs from a long cold winter. I for one shot like it had been a long winter. The weather was pretty good for a February, although some sunshine would have been nice. It was great to have several Alabama cowboys and cowgirls join us.

We had one new shooter Doc Blackburn, 1 junior Red Wolf Swain, 1 buckarette Precious Lil' Prissy and 1 buckaroo Coyote McNeely, it's always nice to see new shooters. It's great to see the young shooters come out and have fun with us "old folks".

After a brief safety meeting by Papa Dave, a prayer by Sergeant Shooter and the Pledge we split up into 2 Cowboy Posse's and 1 Wild Bunch Posse. We caught up with Ned Pepper at the "Line Shack", helped Virgil Earp at the "Depot", cleaned out the "Cemetery", stood with Wyatt Earp at the "Livery" and fought off hostile Indians at "Fort Sweeney.

Several Wild Bunch shooters made it out, I think they're wanting to get in all the practice they can before April 30th, The Tennessee Wild Bunch State Championship. Papa Dave said a special thanks was due Imis Twohofon, his rifle died on the first stage, but instead of borrowing one he just stayed and helped with the Posse. When looking at the times remember the Wild Bunch shot more pistol rounds on several stages than the Cowboys.

Congratulations to the Wild Bunch Top Gun , Capt Jo Walker, followed by Lone Wolf Swain, Sunflower Kid, Slim Jim Dandy and C W Knight rounded out the top 5. It was great to see C W back. Also Congrats to Capt. Jo Walker for shooting a "Clean Match".

I was on Posse 3 and had the pleasure of shooting with Coyote McNeely and Pretty Lil' Prissy, they are really good young folks and worked all day. Our Posse was fairly small and I have to offer a 'Big Thanks" to everyone for working hard and making it run smooth all day.

After shooting the 4th stage we learned that through a clerical error the 2 Cowboy Posse's were not shooting the same exact scenarios. We corrected before the 5th stage and swapped scenarios so we shot the last 2 stages the same. After the match I checked and the only other stage that was different was the "Livery". Posse 2 re-staged their long guns back on the center table and Posse 3 re-staged one on each barrel. It was not enough to make any significant difference in the outcome. Papa Dave and I discussed it and decided that since their was a difference no one would win the Cadillac this month, maybe next month.

The Cowboy Top Gun was Buck Dodgers, followed by Sergeant Shooter, Fort Knox, Randy Saint Eagle and Badger McNeely rounded out the Top 5. Congratulations to Cheyenne Thornton and Colonel John W. Reed for shooting "Clean Matches".

I have to say thanks to Birdgun Quail, Buck Dodgers and other on Posse 3 for helping me take pictures and also to Rawhide John's wife for taking pictures on the Wild Bunch Posse.

Wartrace Regulators Feb. 5 2010 Match

11 Cowboys braved the winter weather to come help defend Wartrace. I had to work but I checked the morning forecast, 40 degrees at 5 am. That didn't sound bad but they were predicting low 30's with 15 to 25 mph winds. When I came back through town to head to the range at 12:30 it was 29. I got to the range just as they were finishing the 3rd stage and it was chilly but the wind had died down some. You could tell they were having to contend with cold fingers as no one shot the match "clean".

We had 3 new shooters join us and 1 shooter I believe shooting his 2nd match. We'd like to welcome new shooters Rawhide John, his son Rawhide Nick and our newest Wartrace Regulator Tom Cassidy, also Cowpoke on I think his second match. Everyone seemed to be having a good time in spite of the cold.

Whiskey had 5 good stages written, some with movement to help warm you up.

The Top Gun of the match was our youngest shooter Vaquero Jake, he was followed by Papa Dave, his dad Shaddai Vaquero, Whiskey Hayes and Cheyenne Thornton rounded out the Top 5.

I was unable to take any pictures but if anyone sends me some I'll add them to this post.

I'd like to thank everyone who came out to shoot with us and promise sooner or later the weather will get better.

Another Future Cowgirl

Brynne Christine, our 4th Granddaughter was born on Jan. 26th, weighed 7lb 7oz and 20" long.

It's a little to early to tell but I hope to have to give her an alias so she can do SASS shooting with me.

Brynne is shown here with her Mom and Dad.

In the slideshow Jade our oldest Granddaughter is pulling Whitney and Brooke, her twin sisters on a sled, along with a few more pictures of all the girls.

Hopefully out of 4 I'll get at least 1 Cowgirl shooter.

Wartrace Regulators 1/1/11 Match

The Wartrace Regulators and friends got to ring (steel) in the New Year with our first match of the new year and new decade. Conditions were less than ideal but a few pards came out to join us. Actually the high was in the high 50's, the problem is that was just after midnight Saturday morning.

We had 15 registered shooters, however only 11 finished the match. The McNeely's ended up not shooting but stayed and helped with all the Posse duties, without their help it would have been a hard day. Without them, Lickskillet Charlie and Montado we'd have had to cancel.

The Gallows was our first stage of the day and it reminded me of The Tennessee State Championship in Memphis in 2009. The wind and rain was BITTER. Whiskey wrote some fast and fun (after the rain quit) stages. We had a variety of shotgun targets including a clay in the air, 2, 4, or 6 knockdowns ( that one took me 8 shots) and we had a Lawrence Welk sweep on the last stage which turned out to be my best. The rain quit and the wind died down after the second stage and the rest of the day was pretty nice for January.

I decided to shoot Double Duelist style and before I got done with the first 2 stages I was beginning to think I should have picked a warmer and dryer day to try that but I got through it. After the last stage my hands were limbered up enough I'd have liked to have shot a couple more.

Sergeant Shooter was our Top Gun of the day followed by Whiskey Hayes, Randy Saint Eagle, Papa Dave and Sheriff Frank Canton rounded out the top 5. I'd also like to congratulate Papa Dave for shooting the only Clean Match of the day. This was an amazing feat considering he spent most of the day fighting rifle problems.

I have to say a Big Thank You to Shotgun Schoolmarm for doing registration and stats and thanks to Feisty Mama for helping her.

Our next scheduled match is Jan. 15 and will be Wild Bunch/ Cowboy for those who want to break out their 1911's. This will also be on the winter time schedule. For more info on this and our Cold Weather Policy check out our Website.

Wartrace Dec. 4 2010 Cowboy Match.

32 shooters decided to take a chance and go to Wartrace on Saturday to help Marshall/ Sheriff Fatback Slim defend Wartrace from all manner of Horse Thieves and Holligans

We made the right choice as the weather turned out to be good for December. It was a little cool and windy at times, but no rain. It looked a little iffy early as Cheyenne Thornton and I hitched up the team and traveled in the rain until about 10 miles from the range. It was dry the rest of the way, that's why I don't care what it's doing at home when I head out.

It was a great match with all the stages in memory of Fatback Slim.

I had a hard time hitting my targets and I wasn't the only one. Papa Dave and Fort Knox were the only 2 to shoot "Clean", congratulations to them.

Whiskey Hayes decided we would shoot a "Total Time" match today and I for one was glad to try that out instead of "Rank". As Whiskey said sometimes Rank helps you and sometimes it hurts you, but it is a whole lot easier to explain total time to a new shooter. I'm not sure how long we'll do this but we're going to try it for a while.

Papa Dave was the "Top Gun" of the day followed by Buck Dodgers, Sergeant Shooter, Randy Saint Eagle and Shaddai Vaquero rounded out the top 5.

New Cowgirls?

This morning I had 1 granddaughter, Jade.

This afternoon I have 3, Jade, Whitney and Brooke.

Whitney has the pink hat Brooke has the yellow.

Whitney was born at 12:12 pm and Brooke was born at 12:15 pm. Whitney was 5.8 lbs. and 19" long, Brooke was 5.6 lbs. and 17 3/4" long. Both babies and Mom are doing great, Dad's doing great as well, except for the first diaper he had to change, but he'll get used to that. Jade said they need to be potty trained by the time they are 8 weeks old, I think she is in for a surprise.

Now we are waiting for 1 more in February, 4 grandkids is a nice number.

Comin' At Cha Nov. 4-6 2010

14 Wartrace Regulators headed west to help out T-Bone, Ringo "By Gawd" Fire, Nuttin' Graceful and all the Dooley Gang and friends in a range war called Comin' At Cha, at The Badlands Bar 3 Ranch, The SASS Southwest Regional in English Texas. 389 Cowboys and Cowgirls came to join in on the fun and many others came just to watch.

We hitched up the wagons and headed out before daylight Wednesday morning and got to our bunkhouse ( The Best Western of Paris Texas) well after dark. We were just in time to grab some chow next door before they shut down for the night.

Thursday morning we made the 45 minute drive to the range and tried to find a place to park our covered wagon. They had a big rain Tuesday and Wednesday and had to make do without one of their main parking areas on Thursday. Nuttin' and Dewey Cheatem did a great job of finding us a place.

We had the usual side matches Thursday afternoon and had a chance to get familiar with the range set-up and targets. If you want to see some amazingly fast shooting go to the side matches at a match this big. Plenty of these cowpokes can shoot faster than I can count.

We had the morning shift on Friday and had to roll out pretty early to get to the range on time. The temperature was in the low to mid 30's at shooting time, but warmed up to the mid 60's.

The Stages were fast, fun and in your face, plenty close enough to get over confident and exceed your speed limit. We shot stages 1 thru 5, and with only 1 "Stand and Deliver" stage there was enough movement the help you warm up, but not enough to wear you out. The most unusual stage of the day for me was Stage 5 "The Texas Chicken Ranch" all rifle, including a reload, and pistol rounds had to go through the State of Texas cutout in a large target and not ring any steel. If you had a "ding", it was a miss, many ran this very fast, a few too fast and hit the target.

Saturday we had the late shift, so we slept in and got to the range by mid-morning. Plenty of time to check out all the vendors including Blackwater Old West Mercantile with Blackwater and Hatfield (Wartrace Regulators). Then get an early lunch before shooting in the afternoon. It was much warmer Saturday when we started shooting, but I started the day with a rifle that didn't want to cooperate and had my slowest stage of the match and my only miss. The last 5 Stages were just as fast and fun as the others. 2 of my favorite were Stage 9 the "Outback Steakhouse" where you shot your rifle down the hall before grabbing your shotgun and shooting out 2 different doorways, then placing your shotgun on a table in the 3rd door and shooting both pistols out that door and Stage 6 the "Big Wagon". I shot my best stage here finishing 18 overall on this one. Did I tell you this was a "BIG" wagon, 15' or taller I'd guess. You triple tapped 3 very big buffaloes with your rifle reloaded 1 round and shot a gong out beyond the buffs, then you did a 5 shot "Nevada Sweep" with your shotgun, no pistols on this stage.

After finishing the match we packed up the covered wagon and got ready for the awards banquet held on the ranch. Outback Steakhouse had a good steak for us before the awards started. The banquet theme was the Roaring 20's so we saw lots of interesting costumes. T-Bone knows how to keep the ball rolling so we were out and watching the fireworks show over the lake by 9pm.

Texas Rick O'Shay was the Top Gun and Half A Hand Henri was the Ladies Top Gun.

I think it's pretty impressive for a small club in Tennessee to have 14 members go to Texas for a match. I think we all had a really good time. My only complaint is next time I won't stay so far away from the range.

The Regulators Reckoning; The 2010 SASS Tennessee State Championship

The Tennessee State Championship is now in the record books and it was a great match. We had 154 Cowboys and Cowgirls come and try their luck. The good Lord smiled on us and we had fantastic weather. We started out on Thursday Oct 7 with the usual speed Side Matches, a 3 stage Wild Bunch Match and Long Range Matches.

We had 20 competitors in the Wild Bunch Match with Duck River winning the Traditional Category, Blackfish Kid won the Modern Category, Feisty Mama won the Ladies Traditional and Dew R Dye won the Ladies Modern.

Prestidigitator and Dew R Dye took home the majority of the speed event wood, but we had some fast Cowboys and Cowgirls that won the others.

All Side Match Times

I don't have a copy of the Long Range scores but there were several different winners in those events.

Friday morning Whiskey Hayes welcomed all the shooters and Papa Dave had a brief Safety Meeting followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, then Sgt. Shooter offered a prayer. By 10 am we had shots going down range.

Whiskey Hayes wrote and set up some interesting, fast and fun Stages with big close targets. Believe me, they were fast, the Top Cowboy averaged 16.8 seconds per stage for the match.

All were Gunfighter friendly with no split pistol stages. We shot 5 stages on Friday, followed by dinner and Karaoke ( Marshall Red Stockburn and Lilly Lynn kept it going). We learned that some of these Cowboys and Cowgirls can really sing well. We also had all of the side match awards and lots of door prizes, including 2 guns ( 1 from Mid-Tenn Guns and 1 from Franklin Gun Shop) and a Papa Dave Gun Cart.

Saturday morning brought another day of great weather and the final 5 stages. The range was divided into 2 sections with half the shooters shooting 5 stages in the Old Town and the other half shooting 5 on The Hill on Friday and swapping on Saturday. This kept down a lot of excess walking. Saturday went as well as Friday and we were done shooting by the middle of the afternoon. This gave everyone plenty of time to check out the vendors and and get ready for the Banquet at the Lakewood Country Club.

The range has seen lots of improvements in the last year and we have to say a big Thanks to all the Cowboys and Cowgirls who put in so much time getting it ready for this event. A special Thanks to Charlie Bowdre and Wes Outlaw for all the dozer work, building new berms and reworking the upper parking lot were just a few of the many things they did.

Saturday night brought one of the best Awards Banquets you'll find at a Cowboy Match. The food was great, we had a good Bluegrass Band and more door prizes including 2 more guns.

We have to say thanks to all our vendors and sponsors and especially to Ruger our Main Match sponsor ( who donated 2 of the 4 guns given away). Please check our Sponsor List and patronize these folks.

Prestidigitator was our Top Gun and Overall Tennessee State Champion, followed by Mose Spencer, Fast Eddie, Unpleasant, Silver City Rebel, Duke Skywalker, Mogollon Drifter, S A Pondwater, Ringer and Potshot Parker rounds out the Top 10.

The Top Cowgirl was Sixgun Sallie and Dew R Dye was the Ladies Overall Tennessee State Champion.

Regulators Reckoning 2010 Awards Preview

Wartrace Regulators Cowboy Action Match 9-4-10

53 Cowboys and Cowgirls rode into Wartrace to help us defend the town. With only 1 month left until The Regulators Reckoning, The SASS Tennessee State Championship it was time to rid the town of some unsavory characters. The final preparation at the range is next weekend and we didn't want any trouble. By the end of the day we had run all of the crooks and outlaws out of town. God blessed us with a beautiful day for a Cowboy Match, it just doesn't get much better than this.

Whiskey Hayes, as usual, had some fast and fun stages. Some had options of how to shoot them so you needed to think it out in order to get the fastest time, but none had "P" Traps.

We were delighted to welcome 2 new very first time Cowboy Action Shooters, Chief Red Cloud and Cousin Ron Haggen, who is also a new Wartrace Regulators member. Glad to have ya'll.

Papa Dave was the Top Gun of the day followed by Randy Saint Eagle, Tabasco Jot, CW Knight and Scattergun Kid rounds out the top 5. They will make up the Shootist Category in November. 6 thru 10 were Duck River, Marshall W.D., Sean Clancy O'Conall, Whiskey Hayes and Marshall Red Stockburn. Congratulations to these and everyone who shot with us.

We'd also like to congratulate Cheyenne Thornton, Delap Dave, Papa Dave, Papa Oso and Tennessee Roadrunner for shooting Clean Matches.

Our next match at Wartrace will be The Regulators Reckoning, The SASS Tennessee State Championship Oct. 7-9 2010, If you've not signed up it's time. It will be a Great Match and we'll have lot's of Vendors.

We also have to thank Charlie Bowdre for all the dozer work he and his family has done on the upper parking lot and vendor area, it looks great. It will now be our main parking lot for monthly matches.

Guns Of August 8/12-15/10

9 Wartrace Regulators traveled north to Middletown Ohio to shoot with the Big Iron Rangers. This was the first trip to Guns Of August, The SASS Midwest Regional Match for several of us. I for one hope it won't be my last.

Thursday was side-match day with the usual side matches. Buck Dodgers, Papa Dave, Tombstone John and I shot more than enough rounds for 2 matches and we had a ball.

Friday morning started early for us with a 8 am Safety Meeting. It opened with mounted shooters presenting the Canadian and United States flags and with the playing of both National Anthems. Deadwood Stan welcomed everyone, introduced SASS #1 Judge Roy Bean and then turned it over to Lassiter to go over the Safety Rules.

Smokin' Irons was our Posse Marshall and did an excellent job. Posse 4 was a great posse consisting of Smokin' Irons, Honey B. Quick, Papa Dave, Sheriff Frank Canton, Buck Dodgers, Tombstone John, Goldsmith, Rounder, Lightning Hawk, Buffalo Brady, Jeremiah Longknife, Ida Kno, Velvet Sheath, Justice Lawman, Thunderbolt Hayes and Randy Saint Eagle. Everyone worked well and we had lots of fun.

The targets on most stages, as you can see in the pictures are down hill and in the woods. This was a new experience but I enjoyed it. It was a very scenic range. Sunflower Kid and Slim Jim Dandy had to leave early due to Sunflowers wife having emergency surgery, we pray that she is ok and heals soon.

Friday night we had a meal at the range clubhouse with entertainment by Frederick Jackson Turner. Lassiter presented the Side Match Awards and Buck Dodgers won the Long Range Lever Action Pistol Caliber Side Match .

Saturday we shot in the afternoon starting at 12:30 and we finished just in time to put our guns away before the rain came. It was hot before the rain, mid 90's heat index around 105.

The Awards Banquet was Saturday night at the Manchester Inn. We had a good meal followed by entertainment from Royal Wade Kimes. Then they gave a way some door prizes. Sheriff Frank Canton won a "92 rifle, which made his weekend.

I thank God for allowing me to have a good shoot and keeping us safe while traveling.

I shot my new Widdermatic Marlin all weekend and it ran flawlessly. I have to thank Widowmaker Hill for all his work coming up with with a way to make a Marlin run great and for sharing it with anyone who wants to try it (Widowmaker was 3rd Gunfighter and 48th Overall). This was only the 3rd Match for this Widdermatic, but it has now ran 21 flawless stages. Thanks again Widder.

Thanks to Lassiter, Deadwood Stan and everyone involved in making Guns Of August a Great Match. If you haven't been to Guns Of August put it on your list for next year, you'll be glad you did. I almost forgot Sheriff Frank Canton called me down to the hotel lobby Saturday morning and introduced me to SASS #1 Judge Roy Bean. It was a pleasure to meet the man who started Cowboy Action Shooting and SASS.

Wartrace Regulators 8/7/10 Cowboy Match

56 Cowboys and Cowgirls rode into Wartrace to help out an old cowpoke named Nevada. We helped him keep his brother from getting hanged at the Gallows, get a beer in peace at Grafton's, gun down bank robbers at Well's Fargo, sell his cattle at the Corral and keep The Kid in Jail at Silver City.

Due to the name of the main character in all the scenarios, you might have guessed, every stage was a Nevada Sweep of some kind. Whiskey wrote the stages this way to keep it fast and simple for a hot August match. Several were "Stand and Deliver" keeping the movement down to a minimum. One of my favorite was the Corral where the Texas Star was the center target on a 3 target pistol Nevada Sweep, you started on the Star and did a 10 shot continuous Nevada sweep, after the rifle was shot on a diagonal or X Nevada Sweep starting on the center target with each 5 shots you could clean up any plates still on the Star with your Scattergun.

We had Pards come in from, West Tennessee, East Tennessee, Alabama and Kentucky to help out old Nevada. It was not as hot as it has been for the last week or so, however it was still hot enough.

North Alabama Regulators Match 8/1/10

Cheyenne Thornton, Wild Jill Hickock, Duck River and Randy Saint Eagle headed south to help the North Alabama Regulators clean up their town. The Train Robbers had cut the telegraph wires and we didn't know till we got there August is the "dress down" match. Cowboy hat and Cowboy boots are the only CAS requirements, shorts, short sleeves and t-shirts are fine due to the heat.

We were able to help Uncle Frank and Granna save the Train, protect the Mercantile, take care of the Bank robbers and run off the Outlaws so Uncle Frank could get a bath (and none too soon) at the Barber Shop.

El Camino wrote some fun, fast stages and we all managed to survive the heat. Due to the expected heat a vote was held at the Safety Meeting and only 4 stages were shot. I was 1 of the losing voters.

Tuff Stuff was The Top Gun of the day, followed by Randy Saint Eagle, Graver Bill, Buck D. Law and Ben T. Iron rounded out the top 5. Wild Jill Hickock was the Top Gun Lady, impressive after only 4 or 5 matches.

As you can see by the pictures, Alabama also offers a Wild Bunch Category.

Thanks to everyone for their hospitality and making us feel at home, we usually try to make it to a few matches a year and always have a good time.

Wartrace Regulators Cowboy/Wild Bunch Match 7/17/10

We had 16 Cowboy Action and 8 Wild Bunch shooters disregard the forecast( 95 degrees and 50% chance of rain) and join us for a great day of shooting. God blessed us with an overcast sky and some breeze most of the day that made for a really pleasant July shoot. We shot the same stages that we shot for the July Main Match, with a few changes for the Wild Bunch shooters.

We'd like to welcome 2 brand new shooters, Nicholas Fawley and Kevin Fawley. They shot their very first Cowboy Match, they shot on Posse #1 and they did a great job for their first match.

3$ Dewey shot his first full match and did well also. We always love to have new shooters try our sport, but beware, try it once and you'll be hooked.

We also had several spectators and we are always glad to see them. We had one shooter, Tex, who shot his first match in 3 years and shot it "clean".

Randy Saint Eagle was the Top Gun of the day ( I like saying that), followed by Buck Dodgers, Papa Dave ( Top Gun Wild Bunch), Sgt. Shooter and Sheriff Frank Canton rounds out the top 5.

Wartrace Regulators July 3rd 2010 Match

52 shooters rolled into Wartrace to help fight off Bushwackers at the Line Shack. Help Marshall Hollister arrest Chet Van Meter at the Cemetary, get away from angry soldiers at the Livery Stable. Collect a debt from Harvey Logan at the KO Corral and capture the Horrel gang at Fort Sweeney.

Whiskey Hayes had some fun, fast and interesting sweeps including a Lawrence Welk Sweep. At the Corral we had a ball shooting the Texas Star and a pop-up clay bird. There were no "P" Traps even though I got one, it's pretty bad when the pistols and rifle are the same sweep and you shoot the pistols correct and then mess up the rifle. Given enough time I could think up a good excuse, but for now I'll just have to blame it on a "Senior Moment".

The weather started out great , some cloud cover and an occasional breeze. I had to work and didn't get to the range till about 1pm and more than one Cowboy told me the weather was great till I got there , then it got hot.

Buck Dodgers must have enjoyed the weather as he was the Top Gun for the Match, followed by Marshall Too Tall of the Ocoee Rangers, Papa Dave, Jackson Longstreet also from Ocoee and Tombstone John. These 5 will make up the Shootist Category for our August 7th Match, Congratulations Cowboys.

We'd also like to congratulate Marshall Too Tall, Captain Jo Walker, Sudden Sam, Dobber, Ben Uriah, Cash Jackson, Gringo Gordo and Demented Frenchman for shooting "Clean Matches".

While I wasn't there to see it I think Sheriff Frank Canton and Gringo Gordo had a cake (made by Gringo's wife) to celebrate Papa Dave's 2nd place Elder Statesman finish at The World Championship, End Of Trail, Way To Go Papa Dave.

We'd also like to say HAPPY 91st BIRTHDAY Blue Boy (July 4th), glad you could celebrate another birthday shooting a match with us.

Ocoee Rangers June 26 2010 Shoot

Sheriff Frank Canton, Cheyenne Thornton and I decided to travel East to visit our Pards in the Ocoee Rangers. It's been a year and a half since Cheyenne and I made the trip and I hope it won't take that long to get back next time. It's a 2 1/2 hour drive plus we lose 1 hour (time change) so we have to get out pretty early, but at least they don't start till 10 AM. Traveling with Frank there is never a dull moment, so the ride went very well. It's always fun to see Ocoee Red, Festus, Widder, Fast Harley, Last Kiss, Too Tall, Tombstone, The Pleasantly/Unpleasant Gang Ziggy and all our Eastern friends.

We also had the pleasure of meeting and shooting on the Posse with Anita Margarita and Jackalope. They are avery nice couple and shoot great. We shot on Posse 5, The Pleasantly/Unpleasant Posse and had a ball. For some reason I think they tried to keep me and Widder off the loading table at the same time, maybe we laugh too much. We shot 5 stages with interesting sweeps, they should have been fast stages but you couldn't tell it by looking at my times. The humidity seemed extremely high and the temp must have been in the high 9o's, but the Rangers were prepared with coolers of water on a couple of stages. Although it was hot we had a Great Time.

Marshall Too Tall was the Top Gun for the day, followed by risin' outlaw, Purly, Pleasant and Widder

North Alabama Regulators Match 6/6/10

Papa Dave, Sheriff Frank Canton, Buck Dodgers, Tombstone John, Duck River, Randy Saint Eagle and Dobber decided to head south and join the North Alabama Regulators for their June Match. This was my first trip of the year to Alabama and I hope it won't be my last. We always have a good time with all our Alabama pards.

During the safety meeting El Camino mentioned Stage 4 had all reactive targets and that some stages look better on paper than after they are set up. Stage 4 was fun, but with 18 ropes on the ground, I think he may have been right. All kidding aside he had 5 fun stages with no "P" Traps.

Most of us from Wartrace shot on Posse # 3 and it was a good one. We had the pleasure of shooting with Diablo Del Thomas, a Buckaroo shooting his first Cowboy Match. You'd never have known it if you hadn't been told, he was trained well and did a really good job. We also got to shoot with fellow "B" Western shooter Stacy Hill, it was good to see him up and shooting after medical problems last year at Ambush. I also enjoyed meeting and shooting with Doc Duncan a very impressive Outlaw Shooter and brother to the infamous Judge'm All Duncan.

It was a hot muggy day but God blessed us with cloud cover and a good breeze most of the day. We shot 5 stages straight through and ate lunch while they tabulated the scores and got ready for the Awards Presentation.

Tuff Stuff was the Top Cowboy and shot 5 stages in an awesome 90.50 seconds, all the rest of us got in more shooting time for our money.

Wartrace Regulators June 5 2010 Match

We had a great day for a shoot, it was hot but not as hot as it will be in August. We had 70 registered shooters including our friends from East Tennessee, Alabama and Kentucky.

It was a good day to defend Wartrace against all manner of ruffians, I used to say Outlaws but we have some pards who are Outlaw Shooters and while none of them made it Saturday we welcome them anytime.

Whiskey wrote and set up 5 fast, fun and Gunfighter, actually any shooter, friendly stages. Thanks mostly to our pards from the east we had 5 Gunfighters.

Papa Dave was the Top Gun for the day and he continues to always impress me. Papa was followed by Shaddai Vaquero, Vaquero Jake ( an impressive Buckaroo), Clancy O Connal, and Marshall Too Tall will make up the Shootist Category for July. Kid Ziggy, Pleasant, Lil' Marshall W.D., Duck River and Marshall Red Stockburn round out the Top 10.

I'd also like to congratulate Cheyenne Thornton, Demented Frenchman, Gringo Gordo, Hardluck Hudgens, Judge Injury, Papa Dave, Perfecto Vaquera, Pleasant, Sheriff Frank Canton and Swifty Waters for all shooting Clean Matches.

I'd also like to welcome "First Time" CAS shooter and our newest Wartrace Regulator, Branchwater Jack.

I'd like to thank everyone for their patience Saturday morning as a wreck on I-24 caused us to get started a little late, Cowboys and Cowgirls were having a hard time getting to the range.

Wartrace Regulators Cowboy/Wild Bunch Match 5/15/10

28 Cowboys and Cowgirls decided not to join the FWSA ( Fair Weather Shooters Association) and came to Wartrace instead of believing the weather forecasters. They made the right choice, although it was overcast and humid there was no rain. Due to the construction in the "Old Town", the entire match was shot on the "Hill".

I had to work and got to the range just as the mostly Cowboy Posse was finishing up. The mostly Wild Bunch Posse was just preparing to shoot their last stage, the Outlaw Cabin. I was able to take some pictures, however that is not the best stage to take pictures in. I suggested to Gringo Gordo that he might want to shoot this stage right handed since I had a better angle for right handed shooters. He wasn't very receptive of the idea.

We had 12 Cowboy shooters and 18 Wild Bunch shooters slinging lead down range. When it was over all the Outlaws had been run out of Wartrace one more time. Thanks to Papa Dave Wild Bunch is growing at Wartrace.

After the last shot was fired Hot Lead Dancin' told me he had a Clean Match, Feisty Mama disagreed. Hot Lead said it was clean in his mind anyway, that might be the easiest way for me to shoot a clean match as well.

The Top Cowboys were, Two Clicks, Latigo Jim, Sheriff Frank Canton, Johnny Bodock and Dobber.

Top Wild Bunch were Emmett Moon, Marshall Red Stockburn, Duck River, Frank Buckshot, and Deadwood Miner.

Congratulations also to our Clean Shooters; Wild Bunch, Emmett Moon and Deadwood Miner.

Cowboy and Cowgirl; Doc Holly Mae and Evil Butch.

Wartrace Construction 5-12-2010

I just wanted to let everyone know change is in the air at Wartrace. The Old Hotel and Old Saloon are gone. We have new berms at the Train, The Depot and The New Stage which may see our Wagon back in action. This will give us more opportunities to shoot the Texas Star and The Pigeon Flippers instead of just at The Corral. It will also add many other possibilities in stage design. The work looks GREAT!

Wartrace Regulators Main May Match 5/1/2010

During the safety meeting Will Reilly announced that he had resigned as President due to opening a new gun store. Will had told the Board at the last meeting and had recommended Whiskey Hayes to take over as President, Whiskey accepted and was unanimously voted in by the board.

We would all like to thank Will for his service to the Wartrace Regulators and wish him the best of luck with his new business. We would also like to welcome Whiskey Hayes in as President and look forward to several years of his leadership. Whiskey will step down as Safety Officer and his replacement will be named at a later date.

24 Cowboys and 1 Cowgirl disregarded the bad forecast and came to Wartrace to join Butch and Sundance in fighting their way out of the Line Shack. Helped the Pinkertons go after Frank James at the Cemetery. Joined Marshall Dillon fighting drunken cowboys at the Train. Helped Jesse James fight the Pinkertons at the Corral and fought off Indians at Fort Sweeney. After a successful day of fighting we all lived to come back and do it another day.

We would like to thank Wampas Cat Willie for making his first trip to Wartrace and hope it won't be his last. We'd also like to thank Clancy O Connal, Lil' Marshall W.D., Outcast and Sledge for making the trip west to join us.

Considering the forecast, we were blessed and only had about 15 minutes of rain during the first stage, the rest of the day was great. We shot straight through due to the impending rain and then 9 of us made the trip to Bell Buckle Cafe for a late lunch. Anyone who hasn't tried Bell Buckle Cafe doesn't know what they are missing.

Congratulations to Clancy O Connal the Top Gun of the day followed by Whiskey Hayes, Buck Dodgers, Randy Saint Eagle and Sergeant Shooter rounded out the top 5. These 5 will make up the Shootist Category for our June 5th Match.

Wartrace Main Match April 3 2010

50 cowboys and cowgirls braved the rainy weather to come to Wartrace and help us defend the town. We had pards come in from Alabama, South Carolina, Kentucky and Missouri as well as all parts of Tennessee.

By shooting time it was down to just a drizzle and after the second stage that was gone, by early afternoon the sun was shinning. It turned into a beautiful day.

Buck Dodgers was the Top Cowboy followed by Will Reilly, Harman Hammer, Tabasco Jot and Papa Dave, these 5 will be the Shootist Category for our May Match. Congratulations as well to Tabasco Jot, Deadwood Miner, Imis Twohofon, Rail Dog Pete and MT Shooter for all shooting clean matches.

We had several shooters making their first trip to Wartrace, and one new, first match ever shooter, Tom Horn , welcome all I hope this won't be the last trip for any of you. We always like to encourage new shooter to come out and enjoy this great sport with us.

We'd like to thank everyone for coming out and shooting with us and hope many of you can make it back April 17 for the Mid-month Match, it will be a combined Cowboy/ Wild Bunch Match, headed up by Latigo Jim for Cowboys and Papa Dave for the Wild Bunch.

Wartrace Wild Bunch/ Cowboy Match 3.20.10

8 Wild Bunch and 7 Cowboy Action Shooters came out to try their luck on this wonderful day. We had a nice warm day with enough cloud cover not to roast.

Papa Dave had 5 good fast stages, all on the hill. There were no "P" traps, although at the Cemetery, it would have been better if he had written it the way I shot it. Some people have no sense of humor so I earned a "P" for not shooting it as written.

If we'd had much more fun, I don't think we could have made it through the day. We had some spectators and one comment made to me was that we were just having TOO MUCH FUN, I told them if we weren't having fun we might as well be at work.

Top Gun of the day was Duck River (Wild Bunch) and he was the only one to shoot a Clean Match, 2nd was Buck Dodgers (Cowboy), followed by Randy Saint Eagle (Cowboy), Papa Dave (Wild Bunch) and Sergeant Shooter (Cowboy) rounds out the top 5. The top 6 had 3 Wild Bunch and 3 Cowboys so it seems like a pretty even split.

OVERALL SCORES

Papa Dave started letting Cowboy Action shooters come out and compete at the Wild Bunch matches due to the bad weather this winter and limited shooting opportunities. It was decided last month that since this had worked so well, all Mid-Month Matches will now be Cowboy Action/ Wild Bunch combined matches. This will give people a lot more chances to shoot Wild Bunch and the other Cowboys and Cowgirls a chance to watch it and see if they want to give it a try.

Papa Dave also wanted to thank Sergeant Shooter for getting out early and helping him set up the stages.

Green River Gunslingers 3.13.10 Cowboy Match

Buck Dodgers and I decided at 6:30 this morning to take a chance on the weather and go to Bowling Green KY. to shoot the Green River Gunslingers match. I left my house in the rain, arrived at Bucks house in the rain an hour later, left Bucks house in the rain and got to within 20 minutes of the range before the rain stopped. It just goes to show God loves Cowboys and a good Cowboy Match. Although it was a cool day we had very little wind and NO RAIN for the entire match.

This was my first trip to the range and I thoroughly enjoyed it, it's always fun to travel to other clubs and see how they do things. Yak heads up this Cowboy Club and as an added benefit they had a cake and celebrated his birthday.

23 Cowboys and Cowgirls shot 5 fast and fun stages with no "P" traps. The range is set back in the woods and I'll bet it is really nice when the weather is warmer and the sun has a hard time getting through the trees to roast you. After shooting straight through, shooters choice, we had a very good meal, thanks to whoever did the cooking, and had time to visit with new friends.

I met a lot of really nice folks there and would like to mention a couple of them. Padre de Cinco was a really nice pard and had his family there with him, I understand he will have to change his alias soon, Congratulations. His son Campo Kid was shooting with him and what a great young man he is. This young cowboy is only 14 years old, but remember his name he will be a force to be reckoned with.

Thanks again to Yak and all the Cowboys and Cowgirls who showed us a great time and of course thanks to Buck for hitching up the Mules and hauling us up to the Bluegrass State.

Wartrace Regulators March 6 2010 Match

59 shooters converged on Wartrace for a great day of shooting. The day started out in the 30's and sunny, but by the time the shooting started it was near 50 and mid 50's before we finished.

Through out the course of the day we rode out to the Line Shack with a purty gal, had a run in with a vaquero over King Fishers road, tried to board the Train after being falsely accused of horse stealing and found ourselves in the middle of the Sutton-Taylor Fued.

My Posse started out on the Train and that was appropriate since I started with a train wreck.

Next we moved to the Corral and tried our hand at the Texas Star with the rifle, alternating between the Star and a square plate. Anything left on the Star could be cleaned up with your Scattergun. Then we had 2 pistol dump targets.

Then we moved to the Fort and were accused of stealing horses for the second time today.

After taking a break for some grub we rode out to the Line Shack with a purty gal, only to be confronted by her irate, soon to be late, brother. We finished up our day at the Cemetery where we had to make a road over a ornery vaquero.

We'd like to thank our Pards who came over from East Tennessee and also several who came up from Alabama to help up clean up Wartrace.

As always Whiskey Hayes wrote some fast and fun stages with "No P Traps" but with ample opportunity to get over confident and to exceed your speed limit.

Papa Dave was on a roll and was our Top Gun for the day, followed by Buck Dodgers, Will Reilly, Whiskey Hayes and Scattergun Kid. These 5 will make up our Shootist Category at the April 3rd Match.

Congratulations also go out to Slim Jim Dandy, Hardluck Hudgens and Pond Creek Pete for shooting Clean Matches.

Papa Dave, who heads up our Wild Bunch Matches opened them up to Cowboy shooters as well this winter due to weather related limits on opportunities to shoot. After trying this for 2 months with no problems our Mid-Month Match will now be a combined Cowboy Action/ Wild Bunch Match.

Wartrace Regulators Wild Bunch/ Cowboy Match 2.20.10

On Saturday Feb. 20, 12 Wild Bunch and 5 Cowboy shooters got together to try to rid Wartrace of bushwackers, horse thief's, crooked lawmen and injuns. It turned out to be a beautiful sunshiny day with temps passing 60 degrees, it was by far the best weekend we've had in 2010.

Papa Dave wrote some good stages, nothing too complicated and most had enough movement to keep it interesting. It was especially fun to shoot the Texas Star with our 1911's. Many of us found that we should zero our auto's to find out exactly where they're hitting, Texas Star plates are a lot smaller than what we usually shoot. The misses on the star had everyone laughing, but Papa Dave wrote the stage where we could clean up the star with our scatter guns if needed, so no one had a miss on the star.

The weather was so nice I hated for the day to end, this would have been a great day to shoot 6 stages.

In the end Duck River was the top shooter of the day shooting Wild Bunch Open, Papa Dave allows 3 Wild Bunch Classes, Traditional and Modern, per SASS rules, and Open which permits any semi-auto except .22 cal. and any SASS main match rifle. That way folks who shoot .38's can still compete without having to buy a new rifle.

Marshall Red Stockburn came in 2nd shooting Wild Bunch Modern.

Congratulations to Crooked Penny and Rockwood Ranger for shooting clean matches.

I was disappointed that we didn't have a better turnout on such a great day, hopefully we'll have just as good weather for our March Cowboy Match, March 6 2010 I hope everyone will make plans to attend that match.

After the match I decided to make a trip to one of my favorite places in Bell Buckle, Designz By You. Joe Sheetz can do some great things with his Laser. I decided to see what he could do with my shotgun stock, it already had some checkering, but I wanted to add something else. My daughter had already made me a Randy Saint Eagle logo for my cards, so Joe modified it some and laser engraved it into my gun stock. It turned out great, I would urge everyone to go by and see what Joe can do. His rates are very reasonable and the quality is excellent.

On Saturday, February 13th, Cowboys, Lawmen, the calvary, and an outlaw or two formed a posse to shoot the February match. We fought rustlers, hard headed judges, and pursued justice, along with coping with cold temperatures. The sun never materalized as promised by our weather forecasters and that coupled with the wind chill caused the Regulators to decide going home early to sit by the fire made more sense than slinging lead, so our match stopped after 3 stages.

As usual Whiskey Hayes created interesting stages that were easy to follow which was a blessing since our brain power was compromised by the wind and cold.

Once again Papa Dave killed the most outlaws in the quickest time. Buck Dodgers was 2nd, which was impressive since he had not been able to be with us since last fall.

Next Saturday, February 20th, will be the Wild Bunch match and Papa Dave has opened the match to any Cowboys shooters who want to particpate.

Our next scheduled Cowboy match is the first Saturday in March. So load up on ammo, get your horses shod, check the wanted posters and join us as we rid the west of varmits and other unsavory charcters.

Remember our regulators who have health issues, especially Greyhorse. Keep them in your prayers and drop them a card or give them a call.

Wartrace Regulators 1-16-2010 Wild Bunch Match

11 shooters came out to the Wild Bunch/ Cowboy Action Match at Wartrace. To my knowledge this was the first combined Wild Bunch and Cowboy Action Match for Wartrace. Papa Dave heads up the Wild Bunch matches and decided that since there had been some matches cancelled this winter due to bad weather, he would open this Wild Bunch Match to us Cowboy Action shooters as well. We had 5 fast stages and the match went really well and I saw no problems in mixing the two disciplines. I still think on main month match should be Cowboy Action only, but see no problem with combining Wild Bunch and Cowboy Action for the Mid-month match, if people wanted to do that rather than have 3 separate matches.

I, for one, was a little disappointed in the turnout. I thought with the first day this year starting out above freezing and a forecast of near 50 degrees, more folks with "Cabin Fever" would come out to shoot.

I decided to play today , so I shot 3 stages Gunfighter, 1 stage Double Duelist because we had to move between pistols, and the last stage I shot traditional. After 3 misses on the first stage and not shooting any stages clean I knew I needed to practice. Most of us had misses, gun problems or brain fades, except for Gringo Gordo and Deadwood Miner who both shoot "Clean Matches".

Frank Buckshot decided to test his marksmanship skills on one stage and shoot the rifle targets with his pistol.

We had 6 shooting Wild Bunch and 5 Cowboy Action shooters. Papa Dave was the Top Shooter followed closely by Sgt. Shooter. I think everyone in attendance had a good time and God blessed us with a dry day.

We've Lost A Great Cowboy

At approximately 3:40 this morning Fatback Slim (David Moffitt) went to claim his reward in Christ. I will forever miss my shooting pard and my big brother. Services are Sat. at 2:00 at the Robertson County Funeral Home in Springfield Tn.
Visitation is from 10:00 til 8:00 p.m. Friday and 10:00 til 2:00 Saturday with the funeral at 2:00.
His beloved shooting partners at Wartrace Regulators are honorary pallbearers. No one loved this sport more than Fatback.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society will be appreciated. continue to pray for us as we adjust to this loss.

Nine Wartrace Regulators made the trip north to

"The World Famous Second Annual Blazing Saddles Cowboy Action Turkey Shoot."

Mose, Bella, MJ and the Kentucky Regulators know how to put on a Great Shoot. The hospitality was fantastic. To my Knowledge this is the best one day shoot going. For those who made it on Friday night I understand they had a party including T-Bone Dooley and The Dooley Gang Karaoke and for those who could stay Saturday night I understand another party was on the agenda.

Papa Dave, Marshall Red Stockburn and I headed out early Saturday morning for our first trip to TWFMSBSCATS and we were in for a treat. We met up with the rest of the Wartrace Gang, Memphis Gunslingers, Kentucky Regulators, Ocoee Rangers, Smokey Mountain Shootists, North Alabama Regulators and many others.

92 shooters shot 6 stages based on the movie Blazing Saddles. The stages were fun and fast with some unique props. I think a few folks, including me , had a little trouble with the Kentucky Sweep on stage 5, The Gallows. You dumped 20 rifle and pistol rounds on one large target and 4 shotgun rounds at dummies that didn't have to fall and some of us tried to go too fast. Not Tator though, he ran this stage in just over 11 seconds, I can't even count to 24 that fast.

After we finished the match we were treated to lunch consisting of smoked turkey legs, brisket, baked beans and lots of desserts. Following lunch we had team shoots. Everyone who participated had fun, but in the end, my team including Lefty's Lady, Copperhead Joe, Mountaineer Lefty and Randy Saint Eagle, didn't win.

Following the team shoot was the man against man shoot consisting of 5 pistol KD's and 2 shotgun KD's . Tator took this with just over 5 sec., MJ Spencer was only .3 sec. slower, but he forgot to knock down the pistol targets.

The awards followed with Tater being the Top Gun and Dew R. Dye being the Top Lady.

This shoot had the largest Smokey Mountain Outlaw/ Outlette Posse I know of at one place. 11 Outlaws and 5 Outlettes, Top Outlaw was T-Bone Dooley, Top Outlette was Yazoo City Gal.

The Top 5 were Prestidigitator, Boomerang, Blackfish Kid, Buck Dodgers and More Guns Massey. The Wartrace Regulators fared well;

Smokeout In The Hills

The Tn./Ky. Black Powder State Championship, Oct. 23-25 2009 hosted by The Highland Regulators at Possum Trott.

Sheriff Frank Canton, Marshall Red Stockburn, Papa Dave and Randy Saint Eagle caught the early morning Stage in Middle Tn. and headed to Smokeout In The Hills. Shortly after noon we met up with, Will Reilly, Blackwater Desperado, Shotgun Schoolmarm, Blue Boy and Imis Twohofon, the rest of The Wartrace Regulators who made the trip to the Best Black Powder Shootout that I know of.

We arrived just in time to check into our cabin, sign in and have lunch (which was included in the price of the shoot) and shoot the afternoon side matches (also included). If you've never been to Possum Trott you've missed the "Ringers Humdinger" side match. 10 guns, throw a spear, throw a tomahawk and cover a lot of ground. My only complaint was I needed an oxygen bottle by the time I got to the end (Ringer said he'd try to work on that for next year).

We finished in plenty of time to check out the vendors and shoot the breeze with some pards we haven't seen in a while before dinner (also included). There was a Chili Cook-off which became part of dinner. There was also a best Home Brew contest, a Best Liars contest and a Pumpkin Pie eating contest, won by our own Blackwater Desperado.

Possum Trott '09 Saturday

Saturday Morning ,after breakfast (also included), saw a drizzle of rain for the first of 6 Main Match Stages. The stages were good but on a few you had to think and count, not one of my strong points. The rain moved out by lunch (also included, do you see a trend here?) and by late afternoon we saw some sunshine.

The shooting was over in plenty of time to clean guns and clean up before dinner ( you guessed it).

Blackwater Desperado and Milkbone provided the entertainment for the night, and if you've never seen this band you've missed a really good show. There was plenty of adult refreshment to go around also.

Possum Trott '09 Sunday

Sunday morning started with Cowboy Church, for those who got up in time ( I confess I wasn't one of them). Then breakfast (yes) and the final 4 stages. Sunday morning also brought sunshine, not so good for those of us starting on stage 9 and getting to stage 10 just as the sun came over the hill and right in our eyes ( but now we know what it is like for the folks who shoot black powder all the time). After finishing the last 4 stages we had time to pack up the covered wagon and have lunch (included) while they finished up the scores.

In case you didn't realize it yet, after paying your entry fee and cabin rental the only place you could spend money was with the vendors, everything else was included, plus everyone got a door prize. WHAT A DEAL!!!!!!!!

The Top 10 shooters were 1. Little Wing, 2. Ringer, 3. Black Tom, 4. Silver City Rebel, 5. Tall Drink A Water, 6. J.D. Brooks, 7. Copperhead Joe, 8. Shaddai Vaquero, 9. Isom Kid, 10. Black Jack Beeson.

Wartrace Regulators made a good showing and for the first time when I've been at a shoot everyone from Wartrace won an Award. The Smokeless shooters were not scored with the Black Powder.

Wartrace Oct 10 '09 Monthly Shoot

39 Cowboys and Cowgirls descended on Wartrace to rid the area of all manner of Outlaws and Holligans. The weather was less than ideal, but to those of us who were in Memphis for the State Shoot, A Gunfight In Dixie ( subtitled a Monsoon in Dixie), it seemed like desert conditions, we were dry before lunch and hardly even a drizzle in the afternoon.

Whiskey Hayes treated us to some good Stages, fast, and a couple that were like you might find at an annual shoot somewhere. I think Whiskey is doing a great job with interesting stages every month. For those who didn't know, stage 4 is the CAS World Record Stage, click on this link to see how you fared against the records.

We had some excellent shooters with us today and I'd like to welcome Prestidigitator, he's in school at MTSU and will be shooting with us for a while. He was also the Top Gun for the day.

I'd also like to give a special Congratulations to Vaquero Jake who finished 4th overall today and will be in the Shootist Category next month if he can make it back. This is a great feat for a Buckaroo shooter or anyone for that matter, it's not easy to get into the Top 5 at Wartrace.

Oct 23-25 '09. It gives you a much better appreciation for being able to see your targets.

The Top 5 were Prestidigitator, Whiskey Hayes, Will Reilly, Vaquero Jake and Lil' Marshall WD. I think it says a lot for the caliber of shooters we draw when you see the top 5 shot in 5 different categories.

Ambush at Cavern Cove 2009

Papa Dave, Sheriff Frank Canton and I hitched up Papa Dave's wagon and made the trip to Ambush, The SASS Alabama State Championship, hosted by The North Alabama Regulators, Oct. 2-4, 2009

This was my first trip to Ambush because it is usually on the same weekend as the workers shoot thru for the Tennessee State Championship.

We got there just in time to check in, have lunch and shoot the afternoon wave of side matches.

They had the standard side matches plus The Cool Waters Secret Stage. It was a lot of fun and I, for one, am glad they made it a side match and not a main match stage.

Saturday morning started off with a safety meeting and a very interesting short presentation with some history about our flag.

We were on Posse 9, " The Absolute Best Posse there", Sidekick did an excellent job as our posse marshall, and everyone worked together making it as smooth running a posse as I've ever been on. We had 8 Category winners on our posse, as well as Sidekick the Ambush '09 Top Gun,

After 6 straight forward and fast stages we had plenty of time to visit the vendors, I've never seen so many vendors at a State Shoot, and clean up before the Sat. Night Banquet.

At the banquet we had a good meal, Best Dressed awards and door prize giveaways, I think they gave away 5 guns, but of course, none of us won anything.

There were ladies dressed in beautiful dresses and costumes as well as a lot of well dressed men. I was so stressed out over shooting bad I left my camera in my guncart at the range. See Sheriff Donalds Pictures.

I think I forgot to mention, the weather Saturday was fantastic. Papa Dave and I are still trying to think up a good excuse for why we shot so bad. I had 5 misses.

Ambush '09 Sunday

Sunday started with overcast skies for our final 4 stages. Apparently I do better when the weather is not perfect, I was clean on these.

We had just a slight drizzle just as we finished shooting, but it stopped before we got our gear packed.

We finished in plenty of time to visit the vendors again, eat lunch and visit with our old friends and some new ones.

The side match awards were given out as well as a Spirit Of The Game Winner from each Posse. Tennessee Triple B won it on our posse and no one was more deserving. That was followed by a brass auction to benefit the Boy Scouts who spent their weekend picking up and sorting brass and shotgun hulls. I would consider it a huge success as over $2100 was raised for them at the auction.

Next all the plaques were presented to The Alabama State Champions in each Category.

I apologize for my award pictures, it seems all the flashes were wreaking havoc with my auto focus. Again see Sheriff Donald's Pictures as they are better than mine.

You couldn't have asked for better weather, if you

were a Duck. I thought Duck River stayed home,

but by the time we finished up Sunday it seemed like

we were wading through a river. Our Posse finished

up on stage 10 and it was beginning to get a little

deep.

The Memphis Gunslingers did an excellent job of

putting on a Great Match in less than ideal conditions.

This continues to be one of my favorite

Annual Matches. I'd like to thank Mountaineer Lefty,

Walking Short, Cherokee Sergeant, Dew R Dye, Bella

Spencer and all The Memphis Gunslingers who worked

so hard to put on this match.

Buck Dodgers won The Speedy Gonzolas Side Match

Award for the 3rd straight year.

The Main Match Stages were fast but you had to think

on some of them.

On Saturday night we had a good steak, or chicken,

catered by Outback Steakhouse. Every night after the

guns were put away there were coolers,

full of soft drinks and beer, opened.

Dooley Sworn and his band provided the

entertainment on Saturday night.

A Letter From Capt. Jo Walker

This letter is written by Capt. Jo Walker aka “The new guy at Wartrace”.

After returning from overseas duty, 1973-75, I shot from 1976-88 representing the All National Guard pistol team. Shooting matches are nothing new to me so I can speak from experience when I say, “No team or match has ever offered the fellowship and friendly atmosphere of SASS and the Wartrace Regulators”.

Memphis was the first SASS State match I have ever attended and I came in 7^th. in the 49ers. category and missed a trophy by 2 standings. But it really did not matter because I was given a trophy by the Wartrace Regulators that means more to me than any piece of wood and gold plated plastic Memphis had to offer.

No less than 8 Regulators spoke to me with encouragement. I was told by multiple members that in the short 6 months I have been a Wartrace Regulator that they have seen me improve my newly learned skills with good results. Each member offered their smile and words of wisdom. Each one gave me something worth more than a materialistic symbol, they gave me the best trophy anyone could offer. A true sincere trophy given from the heart. A trophy that I am an accepted member of the Wartrace Regulators and we work as a team to assist one another.

I only hope that I can have the honor of passing this trophy down to other new members in the future with the same sincerity and wisdom that it was given to me.

Things I learned at the Memphis State Match.

#1, Sleep well before the match, if you have a favorite pillow or blanket bring it to the hotel with you. If you can not sleep…you will miss.

#2, Do not shoot your first stage of the day at 100%, about 80% will do. Otherwise…you will miss.

#3, Do not take extra arthritis, heart pills or night pain medication before a match or…you will miss.

#4, Do not wear new uncomfortable boots to the match. About the 5^th. stage you are thinking about your feet and not the targets and…you will miss.

#5, If the stage is muddy, slow down or you may fall down and…you will miss.

#6, If you practice for 6 long weeks at your home range and the State match targets are not in the exact same spot they were at home…you will miss.

#7, If you are used to shooting 6 stages at Wartrace and Memphis has 10 stages remember to bring extra ammo…or you will have nothing to miss with.

#8, If you spend 6 long weeks practicing your style of shooting and 10 minutes before you shoot someone suggests you change your style, Don’t do it!…or you will miss…several times.

#9, If you practice 6 long weeks before a match there is a good chance some of the screws on your Marlin rifle may be loose. Holding the lever screw in with your left pinkie finger during a stage will….make you miss.

Wartrace Sept. '09 1st Sat. Shoot.

53 shooters came out to Wartrace to play on Sat. Sept 5, the weather was a mixture of sun, rain and cloud cover with a nice breeze. If you didn't like the weather stick around a few minutes and it would change.

Whiskey had some fast and challenging stages, you had to think on a few of them, and one stage featured our brand new Texas Star. I think most folks enjoyed shooting the Star, although some of us have a lot to learn about shooting it.

Delap Dave, Coonbone, JB Littlebit, Sheriff Frank Canton, Sunflower Kid, Cherohala Chase, CW Knight, and the father and son team of Clancy O Conall and Lil' Marshall W.D. all shot the match clean. Clancy was shooting Frontier Cartridge, which makes it even more impressive to me.

Overall Winner was Whiskey Hayes shooting Classic Cowboy, followed by Duck River, Will Reilly, Lil' Marshall W.D. and Clancy O Conall to round out the Top 5. They will makeup our Shootist Category next month and that is a hard Category to get into.

World Record Stage

Whiskey Hayes set up The World Record Stage at the Corral so we could see how we did against the current World Records. All current records can be seen on Doc Shapiro's Website.

A few of us tried the stage after our August Monthly Match. We had pretty good luck with it.

As of 8-6-09,

Buck Dodgers has the Modern Category Record with a time of 19.35.

Papa Dave has the Elder Statesman Category Record with a time of 20.65.

Randy Saint Eagle has the "B"-Western Category Record with a time of 21.13.

It's a fun stage to try and I think Whiskey is going to leave it up the rest of the year so everyone who wants to can try it. I think it may be one of the stages in September? Doc Shapiro's site explains what you have to do to be considered for a Record.

ROAD TRIP!!

Buck Dodgers, Papa Dave, Tombstone John and I went to Memphis to shoot their monthly match and boy was it hot!!! This was probably one of the hottest Saturdays this year.

The Gunslingers put on a great match as always. 35 shooters came out and braved the heat. The stages were fast and fun, but at least one made you think some and on that stage I was the first shooter on our posse. It was a Degressive Sweep on just 2 targets. That was the first time I had seen that but I expect I'll see it again.

Congratulations to the Top Five Shooters, Prestidigitator, Papa Dave, Locco Perro, Buck Dodgers and Blackfish Kid.

I thought it was interesting that the top shooter is about 18 and the number 2 shooter is 74, covers a pretty broad span.

Mountaineer Lefty told us they have 146 shooters signed up for the State Championship right now, so if you want to shoot and haven't signed up you better hurry.

The Gunslingers are building covered loading and unloading areas and running electricity for fans, the fans really helped Saturday. Due to the small posse I wasn't able to take very many pictures, but I have a few.

Wartrace 1 '09 Main Match

53 Cowboys and Cowgirls braved the heat to come to Wartrace for our August Main Match. It was hot but we had an occasional overcast sky that helped some.

In spite of the heat Tombstone Peacekeeper and CW Knight managed to shoot clean matches, Congratulations Cowboys.

I'd like to blame it on the heat, but I think it was CRS instead, I got one of the 15 Procedurals That were given during the day. Thats two for me in two months, I'm going to have to do better.

Whiskey Hayes did a good job again of setting up fast and fun stages.

Buck Dodgers, SA Pondwater, Tombstone Peacekeeper, Will Reilly and Duck River were the top 5 Cowboys and will make up the Shootist Category next month.

Birdgun Quail was wanting the True Grit award because he had a splinter in his finger and a mosquito bite, he thought that took a lot more grit than Two Moon Shining shooting in a back brace. We may have to give him an award just to stop the whining.

Wartrace July '09 Mid-Month Match

29 Cowgirls and Cowboys came out to Wartrace for our mid-month match. We had the best weather I've seen for a match this year. I managed to make it through this one without a "p", but I came really close at the cemetery.

The scores just got online today and Will Reilly and Papa Dave were 1 and 2, no surprise, those two are always at or very near the top.

I shot on the posse with Clancy O Conall, he is really doing well shooting Gunfighter, 4th Overall.

I'm not sure if he is a Jedi Gunfighter or not but I'm sure he soon will be.

Whiskey all ready has the stages set for our next match Sat August 1 and I'm sure they will be fast and fun as always.

Blue Boy's 90th Birthday

49 Cowboys and Cowgirls had the pleasure of helping Blue Boy celebrate his 90th birthday during our July 4th Match.
Buxom Boo, Cody Kid, Lady Banker and Fort Knox hosted a nice celebration during our lunch break.
Cody Kid told us Blue Boy SASS 46773 started Cowboy Action Shooting in 2002.
Buxom Boo presented Blue Boy with a certificate from SASS recognizing him as the oldest active SASS competitor.
Will Reilly presented a plaque for his achievement from The Wartrace Regulators.
Charlie Bowdre presented him with the flag that has been flown over the range at every match since he became a Wartrace Regulator.
Lady Banker gave him a birthday cake and she and Boo passed out cupcakes for us all to enjoy.

Blue Boy shoots at most of our monthly matches and The State Championship. He occasionally travels , with his son Imis Twohofon SASS 46646 to other matches.
Blue Boy shot clay target sports with The Nashville Gun Club for about 30 years before discovering Cowboy Action Shooting. He said CAS was much more fun, anyone who shoots CAS knows it's more fun than any other shooting sport.
Blue Boy's father gave him his first gun when he was 10, so he's been shooting for about 80 years and hopes to be shooting for many more.

Blue Boy is a Great person and an inspiration to us all and I hope we can all get together again and celebrate his 100th birthday at the range as well.

Whiskey again had some good stages and I proved you can get a "P" even on a good stage.

Wartrace June 6 Match

What a beautiful day for a Cowboy Action Shoot, the sun was shinning, the sky was blue, there was a breeze to help keep the temp down. It just doesn't get much better than this. 72 Cowboys and Cowgirls came to Wartrace to help defend the town from all sorts of miscreants, and they managed to get all the outlaws taken care of.
A special thanks to Last Kiss and Fast Harley for getting a Posse together from the East. We had lots of pards come in to help us out.
We shot 5 stages that were fast, fun and Gunfighter friendly. We had 5 Gunfighters and 1 Lady Gunfighter, which is something we don't see very often. Also Tennessee Tombstone shot Outlaw Category which is something else we don't see much of.

Friday night after the side match awards, T-Bone Dooley, Ringo Fire and Nuttin' Graceful cranked up the Karaoke. There wasn't a huge crowd , but all who stayed had fun. If you ever have the opportunity to check out The Dooley Gang and their Karaoke, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Shootout At Mule Camp '09

Tombstone Peacekeeper, Two Moons Shinning and I made the trip to Mule Camp, the Southeastern Regional for SASS. After we got there we ran into Rockwood Ranger and Muleshoe Mike, I think we were the only Regulators to make it this year. Several others went to the Mississippi State Championship instead.

We arrived early Thursday afternoon, but decided not to shoot side matches due to rain, it wasn't that bad, but we decided to save our ammo.

We shot on the Friday morning posses, and although the weather was threatening, we were once again blessed and only had a light drizzle while we were putting guns back in the truck. We shot in the afternoon on Saturday and had a light rain during one stage, but it wasn't bad. Once again God blessed us with decent weather to shoot in.

There were several vendors to check out as well as a Cowboy Fast Draw setup. You could use your own guns and gear or they would loan you theirs. This was done with wax bullets, and every registered shooter was given 10 free shots if they wanted to try it. They explained the game well and gave lots of pointers on how to stand, draw and fire. You shot at a target 15' away that had a light in the center. After the ready signal in 2 to 5 seconds the light light up, that was your signal to draw and fire, a hit on the target stopped the time and made the light flash. I was able to get a .620 on my 10th shoot, Tater got a .506, but I was proud to be as close as I was.

Doc Johnson's Traveling Medicine Show was there, he was fun to watch.

Jim Bowman was singing cowboy songs that would take you back to your youth.

Lassiter was demonstrating the art of Fast Draw and giving some history on the sport.

Joe "Hoppy" Sullivan was portraying Hopalong Cassidy.

T-Bone Dooley, Nuttin' Graceful and Ringo Fire were there with Karaoke on Friday night, and they were a ton of fun as usual.
Dirt Merchant presented a birthday cake to Ringo and we all helped him celebrate his birthday.

Barbwire Bluegrass was the band for the banquet.

Outback Steakhouse catered a good meal but it took a while to get over 300 cowboys and cowgirls through the line.

After the meal there were silent auctions, a live auction, raffles and awards, that wound up about 11 p.m.

I know there were other things going on but this is all we took in.

The stages were well written, the targets were big and close ( I still missed 3 of them) and there were no "P" Traps.

I got to be on the Posse with my new friends, Levi Creed, Buck Elliot and Ma Creed, they're a great family and plan to come to Wartrace in July. Levi, by the way is our 1st place Buckaroo for the Regional.

I would also like to thank San Quentin, Dirt Merchant and everyone involved in putting on Mule Camp, for a fun match.

I would also like to thank Two Moons Shinning and Buck Elliot for taking most of the shooting pictures for me.

Well the weather has not been very pleasant in May and we only had 15 shooter come out to take their chances. But guess what again we were blessed and had a good shoot. The rain held off, and the cloud cover kept it from being too hot. I was on the trail and almost home before the rains came. It just goes to show you never trust a forecast, just come on and shoot.

It looks like for our June 6th shoot we'll have some Smokey Mountain Shooting Society pards and maybe some Ocoee Rangers coming to join us, so make plans to be there and see a posse of Gunfighters.

1st May Match '09

Only 11 regulators decided to brave the weather and help stamp out evil in Wartrace. I saw more water in the fields on the way to the range than I've ever seen in this area. I normally cut across from 64 to 269 on Potts road, but it was flooded. The rain stopped shortly after 9. We started about 10, had a light drizzle during part of the first stage. After a few minutes that stopped and we didn't see any more rain until we had finished and loaded our equipment back in our vehicles.

I demonstrated what not to do on the first stage, a stage DQ (traveling rule). Then went on to have 2 misses at the second stage, but managed to shoot the last 3 clean.

The weather turned out to be nice, and never got too hot. I think everyone had a lot of fun (usually at someone else's expense).
The stages were fun, stage 5 made you think a little. Thanks Whiskey for good stages.

Georgia State Championship '09

Six Wartrace Regulators went a little farther south to The Georgia State Championship April 16-19. Imis Twohofon, Papa Dave, Buck Dodgers, Sheriff Frank Canton, Marshall Red Stockburn and Randy Saint Eagle. Dirt Merchant sent me an e-mail several months ago inviting us to come and I'm glad he did. This was my first trip to the Georgia State and I must say it was one of the most FUN matches I've been to.

We shot on the same posse with one of Papa Dave's friends, Polecat, and met and had dinner with 2 others, Regulator Rude and Badlands Barry. We also shot on the same posse with an amazing Buckaroo named Levi Creed, remember that name you'll be reading it in the Cowboy Chronicle. He and his family plan to visit our range this summer.

The Dooley Gang did Cowboy Karaoke on Friday and Saturday nights, as well as helping with the awards. T-Bone and The Gang are great fun.

God blessed us with great weather for this match, and if anyone didn't enjoy this match , it's their own fault, as there was something for everyone.

Georgia State '09 More Pictures

These are more pictures from our first 5 stages. We had a few train wrecks, Marshall Red Stockburn's rifle jammed on the first stage and cost him 10 misses. I outran myself and had a rifle miss. Buck Dodgers got a phone call and missed the stage instructions on stage 4 and shot on a No-shoot target for a "P". We had a few problems, but we had lots of fun.

Couples Shoot and Friday Night Karaoke Georgia State '09

Friday after the first 5 stages were finished they had a couples shoot. Due to a shortage of Ladies they had a pairs shoot after the couples shoot. One on the team shot a rifle the other shot both pistols and both shot their shotguns, it was a lot of fun. the Top Couple was Annabel Lee and Fast Eddie, I don't remember who the fastest pair was.

After lots of shooting we were treated to a BBQ dinner on the range.

Later T-Bone Dooley , Nuttin Graceful and Ringo Fire cranked up the Karaoke as a warm up for Saturday night. Marshall Red Stockburn turned into a real performer. If you ever get a chance to go to a match where T-Bone and The Dooley Gang are providing the entertainment, don't miss it. They are great and really know how to throw a party.

Before the night was over Buck Dodgers, Marshall Red Stockburn and I were inducted into the Dooley Gang.

Georgia State '09 Last 5 Stages and Team Match

On Saturday we finished up our last 5 Stages then we burned up lots of ammo in the Team Match. We had great weather for the entire shoot, a little brisk in the mornings but beautiful as the day progressed. Last year they said it was a little damp, but God smiled on us this year and gave us fantastic weather.

Every Cowboy Shoot I've ever been to starts out with a prayer, and I think when it's over we should end by thanking God for blessing us with the ability to play the game we love.

Saturday Night Karaoke, Georgia State '09

After all the shooting was over we had time to go back to the Motel and clean up before a good dinner catered by Outback Steak House.
Following dinner T-Bone Dooley, Nuttin Graceful and Ringo fire cranked up the Karaoke. There were lots of good singers in the crowd, but one of the best was our own Marshall Red Stockburn.
T-Bone , Ringo Fire, Nuttin Graceful, Fish Creel Charlie and the rest of the Dooley gang really know how to throw a party. We stayed late and had a great time.

I almost forgot between dinner and Karaoke T-Bone and the Dooley Gang did Side Match Awards.

Congratulations to Buck Dodgers, winner of the Speed Pistol and Speed Rifle side matches.

Sunday Morning brought out the Awards Ceremony. We didn't stay for the Top Gun Shoot-Off on Sunday afternoon.

I don't have names for many of the pictures, some I didn't know and some I just couldn't think of (CRS kicks in sometimes).

Wartrace Shoot 4/4/09

God blessed us with a great day for a Cowboy Shoot. Thanks to Very Old Barton for getting Jim Scoutten aka 10 Ring host of The Outdoor Channel's, Shooting USA, producer Mark Shafer, cameraman Chris Gerlach, Mike Irvine aka Black Bottle Mike and Mark's son Justin Shafer, to come to our range and do a segment on our club.

10 Ring and Black Bottle Mike shot 3 Stages with us as well. I also found out that Justin shot a six-gun for the first time while here.

We would also like to thank Gray Rat , a friend of Very Old Barton, for driving down from South Dakota to shoot with us.

We shot from the Gallows, Grafton's Saloon, Wells Fargo Bank, the Depot and the Marshall's Office. Whiskey Hayes put together some fast and fun stages with no procedural traps (although I got one from a senior moment).

The top five shooters were Will Reilly, Papa Dave, Jailbreak Jake, Whiskey Hayes and Shaddai Vaquero. They will make up the Shootist Category next month.

Vaquero Jake celebrated his 12th birthday with us today, thanks for the cake.

J B Little bit shot his first clean match today and was presented a Silver Dollar by Birdgun Quail for his accomplishment.

We hope everyone had a good time and comes to our first mid-month shoot of the year April 18th. Some of us will be shooting The Georgia State Match that weekend. Our next main month shoot is May 2nd, and I think the next Wild Bunch match is May 30th.

Alamo

Well it rained on us at the Alamo but not too hard, many of the inside areas don't allow photographs, so I don't have many pictures of the Alamo. It was smaller than I had visualized it. There were quite a few Tennesseans at the Alamo.

The Live Oak Tree pictured was planted there when it was 40 years old, back in horse and buggy days.

Buckhorn Saloon And Museums

We had lunch one day at the Buckhorn Saloon. They have a cafe, bar and museums upstairs including a Texas Ranger Museum (most of which was behind glass cases and wouldn't photograph very well) and a very large collection of about any kind of animal (Taxidermy) you could think of.

The first several pictures you see are made from Rattlesnake rattles, it seems the founder of the saloon would trade Rattles for a drink, looks like he made lots of trades.

You can easily spend a few hours looking around their museums.

San Antonio Riverwalk

The Riverwalk is very nice, lots of shade and any type of restaurant you could think of. There are lots of nice old buildings to look at. Many of the restaurants have outdoor seating right on the river.
I got out early one morning and saw a boat with hydraulic arms with nets skimming the top of the river and another boat with a pressure washer cleaning the walls from the river up to the side walks. They also have a few fountains that help to circulate the water, all that helps keep down any stagnant water smell.
The boat driver we had on the vote tour was very interesting. He warned us all to use sunscreen, he said when he started this job he was a 6' 3" white white guy (see picture of boat driver). He also said he had relatives that fought at the Alamo. He said his Aunt and Uncle were there 3 weeks ago and got into a really big fight.

It's a nice area and in walking distance of the Alamo, so if you venture to San Antonio stay on the Riverwalk.

Joe Gish's Old West Museum

We drove to Fredericksburg, about 1.25 hours, because I didn't want to be that close and not go to Texas Jacks. Texas Jacks is the ultimate store for most Cowboy Action Shooters. I was a little disappointed that they had almost no B- Western clothing. I did find a Sheplers in in San Antonio though. While in Fredericksburg we found out about Joe Gish's Old West Museum. This is one man's private collection. An add in the local paper said when I'm home it's open, call or come on by. We were lucky and he was home.
Joe is 85 years old and he and his wife go to the gym and work out 3 times a week. He said he'd always been interested in the old west and just collected anything he found interesting.

If you ever make it to Fredericksburg go by and say hi to Joe and look around, it's worth your time. I don't think you'll find any Cowboy Action Shooter that wouldn't love to have such a collection.

San Antonio Bound

My wife, Lannie and I went to San Antonio Texas this week. We stayed on the Riverwalk which was very nice, you could walk out of our Hotel directly onto the Riverwalk. Cheyenne Thornton recommended this place to us and it was great. The Drury Plaza Riverwalk. This building was originally the Alamo National Bank Bldg. and it is a beautiful old bldg.

They serve a full hot breakfast, buffet style (included in room price) every morning. They have free cold drinks and popcorn about all day. You get a drink card when you check-in and every night from 5:30 to 7:00 they have a reception with drinks and snacks.
Your card gets you 3 free drinks per night, and they still have the free soda machine if you're not interested in Adult beverages.

I'll make this into several posts so the slide shows run better.

March '09 Wartrace Match

We had a damp start, but 65 Cowboys and Cowgirls came to shoot in spite of it. We had 1 new first Cowboy Match ever shooter.
I'd like to say welcome Flame, I hope you had a good time, I thought you did real well. Maybe Duck River won't teach you any bad habits.
I apologize for not taking many pictures, but I have a hard time concentrating on pictures, posse duties and shooting, so the pictures take a back seat.

It turned out to be a great day with fast stages, but some that made you think. We also had a pistol and a rifle knock down, and a rifle reload stage. They seemed to be a little quiet about who wrote the stages, but I for one liked them, we need a change of pace sometimes.

Papa Dave is doing a Wild Bunch Match March 21 and our next regular match April 4. Don't forget the mid-month matches start back in April, with Latigo Jim heading them up.

Snow in Middle Tennessee, Mar. 1 2009

Sheriff Frank Canton, Papa Dave, Marshall Red Stockburn, Buck Dodgers and myself had planned to go and shoot with The North Alabama Regulators today. After checking the forecast Friday afternoon we decided to back out on the trip. I think we made the right choice. Snow, high 39, 22 mph Northwest wind, just don't seem like ideal conditions to shoot in.

Hope to see everyone in Wartrace March 7, hope to have a little better weather.

Feb. 09 Wartrace Shoot

What a beautiful day for a Cowboy Action Shoot. I got up this morning and it was 51 degrees, I knew it was going to be a good day. 59 Cowboys and Cowgirls came to save Wartrace from all manner of Outlaws and Hooligans. We shot 5 fast and fun stages. The fastest times on the stages ranged from 17.38 to 26.49, we won't get into the slowest times.

The top 5 shooters were, Buck Dodgers, Duck River, Papa Dave, Shaddai Vaquero and Whiskey Hayes, They will make up next months Shootist Category.

Ocoee Rangers Jan. '09 Shoot

Cheyenne Thornton and I made the trip to the Ocoee Rangers today for their Jan. Shoot. It rained on us all the way there, but by the time we started to unload our gear the rain quit and the sky started turning blue. By the time we left today it was 54 and sunny. Never underestimate the power of prayer.
We were on Posse 3 lead by Yankee Dutchman, with Last Kiss, Fast Harley, Fast Honda, I mean Tombstone (you had to be there), Judgem All Duncan, Yazoo City Gal, Amorous Ali, Ziggy The Kid, Sassy Motchie, Sheriff Lord and I'm getting old , I can't remember who else.
It was a fun shoot with lots of Gunfighter Friendly stages, and Outlaw friendly ( except stage 2), I even tried Gunfighter on stage 2 without much success, but Fast Harley said I got some style points.
I saw many Pards from Ocoee, Tennessee Mountain Marauders and Smokey Mountain Shootist Society. They had 61 shooters today, a good turnout for a Jan. day that started out raining. I'll try to link the scored as soon as they are available.

I got very few pictures and it 2 sets of batteries to get them, I guess you should be wary of batteries that set in the gun cart all winter. Click on link below for scores.

I was unable to make the first shoot of the year due to a tragedy in our family, my daughter can say it better on her Blog than I can.

I hope everyone had a good shoot and the weather wasn't too bad. I would sure liked to have been there. I hope to see everyone in February.

I didn't take pictures at the December shoot, we had 30 Cowboys and Cowgirls show up to brave the cold weather and defend Wartrace against all manner of scallywags. We had 2 posses and shot 3 stages on the hill and 2 in town. Some of the guns didn't like the cold weather, but we got thru it. I think the consensus was that a cold day shooting was better than sitting on the couch and watching TV.

My wife Lannie decided I need a Cowboy Christmas tree so she rounded up some things and we put together a small tree on a table with a few awards from different shoots.

2008 was a great Cowboy Shooting year for me, I was able to travel to several matches with friends, Buck Dodgers, Will Reilly, Tombstone John, Latigo Jim, Duck River, Sheriff Frank Canton, Marshall Red Stockburn, Papa Dave, Tombstone Peacekeeper,and Two Moon Shining. I was able to meet new friends at matches and see many old ones again. I also had an old friend, Cheyenne Thornton, take up Cowboy Shooting and now have someone to ride to local matches with.

By the grace of God and with lots of prayers, my shooting improved this year and I am very thankful to all the folks who have given me pointers and helped me along the way. Hopefully next year I can hook up with Papa Dave for some regular practice.

Finally I'd like to say "Thank You" to everyone I've shot with this year for making it a Great Cowboy Year. May God be with you and bless you through the Holiday season and next year, and remember if it were not for the Grace Of God we wouldn't have this game we love.

Thanks to my wife Lannie for putting up with me for 29 years, daughters Allison ( Allison started this Blog for me) and Natalie, sons in law Matt and Chris, and granddaughter Jade for putting up with me and buying me a camera.

And a special thank you to Charlie Bowdre and Sassy Lora for getting Cowboy Shooting started in this area, without them I'm sure I wouldn't be enjoying this game now.
