Some of the Wartrace Traveling Regulators heard this call and headed out to Phoenix, Arizona. This is the first year EOT has been in Phoenix and we didn't want to miss it.

Reno Mustang had the mules shod, cleaned up the harness, greased the wagon axles and started loading it down. Dodge City Dixie had their boots cleaned and polished, all the ammo checked and boxed and ready to pack. Once they had the wagon loaded down Reno drove it over to my place and dropped it off on Thursday night. Tennessee Williams and I (Randy Saint Eagle) loaded our gear to get ready to leave Saturday morning. My boots weren't clean as I forgot to drop them off with Dixie but we got everything loaded.

Saturday morning Dixie, Reno and Tennessee came over and we hitched the team to the wagon and headed west! We were making great time until we got to Arkansas and all the wagons were backed up. We spent about 2 hours to go about 10 miles. Once we finally got clear of this we were on our way again trying to make up some time as we were going to Elk City Oklahoma before we stopped for the night. It took us 17 hours to get there but we made it. We headed out the next morning and 16 hours later we pulled into Phoenix, Arizona.

Monday morning we loaded all the guns back in the wagon headed to the Ben Avery Shooting Facility Once we signed in for the match we contacted Rattlesnake Slim for help in finding where we could park our trailer for the week. After that we walked around to see the amazing job the Arizona Territorial Company of Rough Riders had done to transform this plain public range into a facility to host the World Championship of Cowboy Action Shooting. We spent the rest the rest of the day checking out the vendors and I dropped off a pair of Bisley Vaqueros with Shotgun Boogie to be short stroked.

Tuesday we got our guns and carts ready and checked out more vendors and the Stages and just relaxed a little.

Wednesday morning we had to be at the range at 7:30 for Warm-Up Match Safety Meeting. We shot stages 9-12, cleaned our guns a little to get ready for the start of the Main Match, Posse 20, on Thursday. After getting some lunch checking out more vendors and the stages we were going to start on stage 8, followed by 5,6 and 7. We checked out the vendors again before the Opening Ceremonies started at 5:15.

Thursday Morning started the Main Match which was shot in 3 waves, 4 stages each day for 3 days. We started on the 2nd wave at 10:30 for our Safety Meeting and then started shooting on Stage 8. We shot the 1st wave on Friday starting on Stage 12 at 8:00 and the 3rd wave on Saturday starting at 2pm on stage 4.

Dixie and Reno each had a rough start on the first stage Thursday with a few misses each, 5 second penalty for each miss. Tennessee and I managed to shoot "Clean", no misses or penalties, the first day. After we finished shooting on Thursday and got everything ready for Friday Reno and I had a Territorial Governors Meeting and Dixie and Tennessee went to the Swap Meet.

On our 1st Stage Friday morning I got in a hurry and had a miss and a procedural for 15 seconds worth of penalties so I thought any chance I had of finishing well was over. Tennessee made it to the 3rd Stage and had a Procedural, 10 second, penalty. Dixie didn't have any "P's" but had some more misses and we should have all followed Reno's lead, he was "Clean" for the day. After we finished we had plenty of time to check out some more vendors, visit with old friends and make some new ones. I also had time to pick up my pistols from Shotgun Boogie and try them out. They are really smooth and I can't wait to get home and run a few stages with them.

Saturday we had a long wait before we shot on the 3rd wave and got to watch a few folks from the 2nd wave finish up. We had a very light drizzle just as we started to shoot but it didn't last long enough to get anyone wet. These 4 stages were my fastest 4 of the match. Stage 2 was my fastest of the match.

By the time we finished Saturday my hip was so sore I had to get my cane out of the trailer just to be able to walk. Tennessee and I closed out the match shooting clean for the day but unfortunately Dixie and Reno were still plagued with misses. It was all over but the crying now so we had to wait another day to see how we finished. None of us were feeling good about our chances.

Sunday Morning we checked out of the Motel, headed to the range, packed and hooked up the trailer and prepared to watch the Top Gun Shoot-offs. After they finished we headed to the Main Tent for the Awards Ceremony and we were getting anxious to see how we did. They start with 10th place and end with 1st in Category so once they get to your Category the tension builds every time they don't call your name. Reno Mustang was 7th Silver Senior Gunfighter, Dodge City Dixie was 3rd Ladies Silver Senior. I was getting really nervous when they called 4th, 3rd and 2nd and didn't call my name, I was almost in shock when they called my name as World Champion Silver Senior Duelist! We were all nervous as they started Tennessee Williams Category, but when the got to 2nrd place and didn't call his name we all yelled loud enough to take the top off the tent because we knew he had won and was the World Champion Duelist. Tennessee also finished 59th Overall out of 723 shooters that started the match, quite an accomplishment for his 1st trip to EOT!

I have to say a huge THANK YOU to Dodge City Dixie and Reno Mustang, without them none of this would have been possible. I hope that we can all go back next year and have even more fun than we had this year.

Happy Trails until we meet again!
Randy Saint Eaglehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01025942939062906435noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7804180108631796130.post-24159095740429018382017-10-17T20:55:00.003-05:002017-10-17T20:55:32.715-05:002017 Tennessee State ChampionshipWe started preparation for this years Tennessee State Championship shortly after last years ended but the actual match started last weekend with the Workers Shoot-thru. We have a Shoot-thru because we use Berm Marshals, office personnel and others it takes to be able to run a match like this. Saturday was a pretty good day but since they were calling for 100% chance of rain on Sunday we decided to shoot all 10 stages on Saturday. It made for a long day but it turned out to be the right choice.

We had so much rain it was Wednesday before we could get back on the range to repaint targets, setup the side matches and put on the finishing touches before the match started on Thursday. There was a lot to be done but we had enough help to make it all work.

Thursday morning the side matches started with the usual Speed Matches including Pocket Pistol, Derringer, Cut The Rope, Long Range (including Pistol), Black Powder, Wild Bunch and Warm-up Match.

Thursday was also "ARE YOU TOUGH ENOUGH TO WEAR PINK" day, we started doing this a few years ago to raise money for the American Cancer Society and Cowgirls and Cowboys have really stepped up to support this. Last year we were able to collect over $2300 so I was really worried about trying to match that this year but we had a lot of support. Dusty Wilcox donated a custom knife that we raffled off for $250, Klassic Laser Works made pink badges that said Tough Enough To Wear Pink and they donated all the money, $250. Blue Eyed Drifter and Vix-n with Vaqueros along with Widder and Red Knee donated a case of AA shells for the best Pink Cowboy, one for the Best Pink Cowgirl and another case with the winner drawn from everyone wearing pink. Mrs. Pleasant came up with the idea to have posses collect money with the posse collecting the most getting a free shoot to next years Tennessee State Championship. Then they could decide however they wanted who would get the shoot. Whiskey signed off on it so we put it in motion.

We had several folks try the "Cut The Rope" target, a 1/4" rope 30' away. TN Missy (Squeaky) spent the most time there and cut 8 of them. Several other folks cut them with rifle or pistol, I cut 2 with a rifle, 1 with a pistol and for the 2nd year I was the only one to cut one with a derringer.

After the regular Side Matches ended we had a Top Gun Shoot-Off with everyone eligible to enter. We have the only one I've heard of that has 3 Categories, Traditional, Gunfighter and Duelist. Sixgun Schwaby was the Duelist winner, Slater won Gunfighter and Prestidigitator won Traditional and Overall.

Thursday night also brought the Chili Cook-off with several entering chili and all of us present were the judges. Chas. B. Wolfson had the winning chili.

Friday Morning started with Whiskey Hayes welcoming everyone, Papa Dave having the Safety Meeting, Pleasant offering a Prayer and leading us in the Pledge. As everyone started to their stages the ladies stopped for a LOCAS (Ladies of Cowboy Action Shooting) picture, best I could tell there were 43 present.

After everyone completed their 1st 5 stages and broke for lunch we had the Team match where we draw 3 person teams out of a box so they are completely random. This years winning team was PeDe, Widowmaker Hill and Christian Mortician. After the team match we had lots of challenge matches including a '97 challenge to Red Knee, Widder and Missouri Traveler by 3 Wild Bunch shooters. The Cowboys started with empty shotguns and the Wild Bunch started with stoked shotguns. Each team had 21 knock down targets and all 6 shooters shot at the same time. The Cowboys won.

Following dinner on the range we had Side Match awards and Blue Eyed Drifter announced the best Pink Cowgirl, Dodge City Dixie and the best Pink Cowboy, Randy Saint Eagle (me), I auctioned off the case of AA's I won and Korupt Karl paid $150 which was added to our Cancer Fund jug. I also won the Long Range Pistol side match.

Whiskey Hayes drew names and every shooter present won a bottle of some type of Jack Daniels (Buckarettes and Buckaroos got alternate prizes) I think around 200 bottles were given out.

Saturday morning brought out the final 5 stages of the match and the weather was just as great as Thursday and Friday. Klassic Laser Works finished up our awards and Ricochet Ruthie, Ida Shot'em and I headed over to the Bell Buckle Cafe Banquet Hall to get the Awards setup. This year we did it in record time, it only took a couple of hours.

Folks were rolling into the Banquet Hall by 5 to socialize and get ready for dinner. When we got their we learned that Posse 1 ramrodded by Ocoee Red collected $567 and won the free shoot. We also learned that $3900 had been collected by all methods we had used. This was $1600 more than we collected last year and I was amazed, but it wasn't over. Unpleasant stopped me with a Challenge, if we could get that up to $5000 he would write us a $1000 check. Whiskey made the announcement and I started canvassing the room asking for more money. After a few minutes we were $267 short and Mrs. Pleasant jumped in to help us collect what we needed. Then we had Unpleasant come up and he handed us a check for $1000 bringing our grand total to $6150.00. I was almost speechless, I never dreamed we would be able to collect that much money. Thank You to all the Cowgirls and Cowboys who donated all this money, hopefully donations like this will help in finding cures.

This year the Jedi Council inducted Shamrock Sadie as the newest Jedi Gunfighter, it couldn't have happened to a more deserving person. Congratulations Sadie and May The Force Be With You.

First thing we always do at the Banquet after eating is recognize the State Champions in each category and I was able to win mine, Senior Duelist. Next we go 5 deep in Category Awards and recognize everyone who shot a "Clean Match", there were 27.

Then we recognize the Overall State Champion Cowgirl, Slick's Sharp Shooter and Overall State Champion Cowboy, Boxx Carr Kid and

The Overall Top Gun Cowgirl, Shamrock Sadie and Overall Top Gun for the match Prestidigitator (Tator).

We had 210 shooters from 17 states so I think we had a great turnout.

The Wartrace Regulators want to thank everyone who came to shoot with us, it doesn't matter how much effort we put into preparation without you, the shooters, it would just be a range. Thanks again to everyone and we hope you come back next year.

I'll add pictures and videos when available if anyone has any.

We loaded down the covered wagon early Saturday morning June 17th, hitched up Reno's team and Dodge City Dixie, Reno Mustang, Papa Dave and I (Randy Saint Eagle) headed west toward End of Trail, The SASS World Championship. Tombstone John and Linda hitched up their buckboard and headed west from their ranch as well. We were loaded heavy but Reno drove them hard and we made it to Shawnee Oklahoma the first day.

Day 2 we pulled out early and made it to Moriarty, New Mexico by about 4pm (we gained an hour when we hit New Mexico). We stopped by the bunkhouse and unloaded some of what needed to stay there and headed to Founders Ranch outside of Edgewood New Mexico to sign in. We made it in plenty of time to check in and pick up our packets. We heard Tombstone and Linda had made it and they came out to join us and check out the Stages.

We were pleased to see the set-ups were great and the targets were mostly closer than last year. After checking out the stages we unhitched the wagon and set up our base camp. Reno had prepared for everything and we had a rug for the ground, a shade shelter, chairs and a table to clean our guns on. After set-up we hit the Pizza Barn for some fine grub and headed back to the bunkhouse for the night.

Monday morning we headed out early to shoot 4 Warm-up Stages. They were a lot of fun and very fast stages. We checked out the vendors and spent some time enjoying the special feeling you get when shooting in the High Desert. After stowing our gear we headed to Chili Hills for supper.

Tuesday we shot the mid day Warm-up Stages and some afternoon, it was pretty hot and we decided after 7 stages we'd had enough for the day. Lassiter and Deuce Stevens did a great job as Co-Match Directors. Lassiter, Deuce Stevens and their crew did an excellent job of setting everything up with plenty of choices on how to shoot it, friendly for right or left-handers. The stages were fast and straight forward with ample opportunity to exceed your speed limit.

On Wednesday morning we went to the range to clean guns and get our ammo ready for Thursday. Afterward we headed for Old Town in Albuquerque for some sight seeing. We had a good meal at a Mexican Restaurant but I can't remember the name. After checking out the area we headed back to the bunkhouse to chill out a little before heading back to the range to check out the stages we'd shoot Thursday afternoon. We completely forgot about the Opening Ceremonies and while we were checking out the stages Taco Bell came by and said they called out your name and I thought she was talking to Dixie, she looked at me and said for your Regulator Badge, I was in shock. Seems Dixie and Reno had been working for over a year getting petitions signed and submitting a letter to SASS to get me selected as a Regulator, I was humbled and very surprised. After the shock wore off and we finished checking out the stages we headed to Katrinah's for another good meal.

Thursday afternoon we headed to the Safety Meeting where they warned us to be on our toes, a bear had been spotted close to the Ranch and 2 Rattlesnakes had been spotted in the outhouses. After the rest of the meeting we headed to Stage 5 for our first stage of the Main Match. It was around 100 degrees when we started, hot but low humidity. We were on Posse 29 With Shamrock Sadie as our Posse Marshall, also on the posse was Knot Hardly Dunn, Avery Wade, Misty Rider, Red Johnson, Kathouse Kelli, Jackaroo, Wild Horse John, Trigger Happy Ted, Christian Mortician, Trail Bandit, Dodge City Dixie, Reno Mustang, Randy Saint Eagle, Papa Dave, Tombstone John, Poncho Sin Lefty and Lucky Boy. Stage 5 was a fast stage with 2 rifle knockdowns and 2 pistol knockdowns. You started at position 3 with rifle in hand, barrel touching table, pistols holstered and shotgun staged at either position 1 or 5. At the beep shoot the rifle 2 on a stationary target, 1 knockdown, 2 on a stationary, then repeat instructions on the next 3 identical rifle targets. Move to position 2 or 4 and shoot 3 pistol targets the same as the rifle targets, then move to the other position either 2 or 4 and repeat on that set of pistol targets, next move to either position 1 or 5 and shoot 2 shotgun knockdown targets, any pistol or rifle knock down targets still standing can be made up by shooting an additional shotgun targets. This was my fastest time of the match with a 16.99 Clean, Tombstone John shot this one in 23.52. On stage 6 we had a moving target with 6 shotgun knockdowns.

Stage 7 was the only "Stand and Deliver" stage in the match with a V shaped target array of 7 combination rifle/ pistol targets and 4 shotgun knockdowns. You started behind a table with rifle and shotgun staged on the table and pistols holstered. With a combination of rifle and pistols shoot the center target and the 3 on the left or right side of the V in a 2-4-6-8 sweep starting from either end. Then shoot the 4 shotgun knockdows in any order. I ran this in a 19.08, Papa Dave shot it in 17.38 and Dixie blazed it in a 15.49. Shamrock Sadie did an excellant job as Posse Marshall and I'd be thrilled to be on a posse with her and Knot Hardly Dunn anytime. After finishing Stage 8 we went back to our base camp, put away our gear and went to check out the stages we would shoot on Friday.

Friday morning we started shooting at 10:30 so we got to the range early to do a little gun cleaning and get our ammo ready. We started on Stage 9 (a saloon) where you stage the shotgun on either of the 2 bars and the rifle on either bar, pistols holstered. At the beep you shoot the 4 rifle targets in a circular clockwise or counter-clockwise sweepstarting on any target. Next engage 2 shotgun knockdowns from each bar and from the center between the bars engage the 4 pistol targets the same as the rifle targets, I shot this in a 19.12. Stage 10 had a rifle reload, you started, you started at position 3 with the rifle and shotgun staged at either position 2 or 4. Start with pistol in hand, at the beep shoot a progressive sweep on 4 targets, 1 on 1, 2 on 2, 3 on 3 and 4 on 4, then move to the 2 rifle targets and put 5 on 1 and 6 on the other (you could load the 11th round in the rifle anytime after the pistols were shot. Then move to position 1 or 5 and shoot the 4 shotgun knockdowns. I shot this in 23.39, Reno ran this one in a 22.05 and Dixie had a really fast 20.94. After we finished Stage 12 we did the Posse Shoot where all but one on the posse lined up with their rifles to try to cut a 4x4 in to. It was set horizontally and turned diamond shaped so you were lookig at the sharp edge of it. At the beep everyone started shooting and when we cut it into and it hit the ground Christian Mortician knocked down 2 shotgun targets to stop the clock. Apparently everyone aimed and Christian was fast with the shotgun because we did it in 5.35 seconds (which proved to be the winning time. Afterwards we cleaned guns and got our ammo ready for the final 4 stages on Saturday. We hat to start at 7:30 Saturday morning so we had to get everything ready Friday night. Then we walked the last 4 stages to see how we wanted to shoot them.

Next we headed to Pizza Barn for supper, Dixie, Reno, Papa Dave and I had been twice but John and Linda hadn't been and we wanted them to see how good it was. I don't think we got back and settled into our room any earlier than 11 any night.

Saturday morning we started shooting at 7:30 and Papa Dave and I were "Clean" going into the last day so I was pretty nervous. We started on Stage 1 where you had rifle and shotgun stage on the shelf in the Church, pistols holstered. You started outside the Church either on the left or right behind the hay bales with hands on fully holstered pistols. At the beep you shot the pistols at 4 pistol targets with 3 on each outside target and 2 on each inside target in any order. Move inside and shoot the rifle same as pistols then shoot 6 shotgun knockdowns in any order. I shot this in a 22.87. After looking back at the scores I saw that my fastest time each day was the 1st stage of the day. When I practice with PeDe and Tennessee Williams I always try to shoot a stage cold before we do anything else, looks like it might have paid off.

Stage 3 had a swinging target but it wasn't bad. On Thursday we had a moving target that came toward you so 2 out of 3 days we had moving targets. Papa Dave and I finished the match "Clean" but I shot the last stage pretty slow, 27.41, it was my slowest of the whole match, Dixie shot this in 20.16, Papa was 23.72, Reno was 26.36 and Tombstone John was 27.50. After we finished we headed back to the trailer and Reno cleaned Dixie's guns a little and Dixie got her ammo together because we were pretty sure she would make the Sweet 16 Shoot-Off. We then had some lunch on the range and checked out the vendors one last time. We went back to the Motel to chill out before supper and heading back to the range to see the Shoot-Off Top 16 and Sweet 16 announced, Dixie made it as we expected.

Sunday morning we headed back to the ranch to get ready for the Shoot-offs. They started with the Wild Bunch Top 8 Ladies and Top 8 Men, then they went to the Sweet 16. Dixie was doing well but was 1 shotshell short of winning the first round, there's always next year. I think Texas Tiger was the Shoot-Off Winner for the Ladies. I don't remember who won for the Men.

Next we went to the Award Ceremony and this year they had it in a big air conditioned text and it sure was nice to have a place to sit down. That was just one of the many improvements since last year, Misty Moonshine and crew are doing a fantastic job. The most exciting thing about the Awards was when they called Papa Dave as Grand Patron World Champion. I have to admit the second most exciting thing for me was when the called my name as Senior Duelist World Champion, my second. I was also excited because this was our 3rd trip to EOT and my 3rd "Clean" EOT.

There were 600 Registered shooter and The Wartarce Regulators represented themselves well at EOT and I'll list them from the highest place Overall finish down.

Vaquero Jake, 2nd Gunfighter, 13th Overall, "Clean"
We started with the Workers Shoot on the 1st and 2nd and for the 1st time in several years the weather was nice with no rain.

We spent the rest of the week on the final preparations before everyone started rolling in. We ended up with 16 folks having to drop out, most due to Hurricane Matthew pounding the east coast.

Thursday was Are You Tough Enough To Wear Pink day and we had lots of Cowboys and Cowgirls wearing pink for the Side-Matches. For the last few years we've collected money for the American Cancer Society. This year Mrs. Pleasant challenged each posse to raise at least $100. Widdowmaker Hill offered to donate a Widder Soft Stroke Action Job to the Posse that raised the most money. Posse 5 collected $500 and gave the action job to Little Lady E. With the help of Mrs.Pleasant, Widder and all the Cowgirls and Cowboys who donated we were able to collect $2379.00 for The American Cancer Society.

We had all the normal Speed events, Long Range Rifle and Cut The Rope. The Cut The Rope is a 1/4" rope held taunt 30' away. Several shot it into with a rifle, I got it with the first shot out of my rifle. Koda Joe came up and said he only needed 1 shot so he loaded 1 round, cut the rope and put his rifle back up. Marshal Rico, Buford Tanner, Buxom Boo, Major Bill and Pilgrim Joe also cut one. TN. Missy was the most prolific as she cut 6 of them. Tennessee Tombstone and I each cut one with a pistol Duelist style. Buford Tanner cut 2, Tennessee Williams, George Emmett, Joe West and Pleasant (probably duelist but I'm not sure) each cut one. I (Randy Saint Eagle) was the only one to cut one with a derringer.

After the side matches we had a Shoot-Off with 22 knock down targets. Everyone is eligible and we actually have 3 Shoot-Offs, 1 for Traditional shooters, 1 for Gunfighters and 1 for Duelists. I won Duelist, Billy The Avenger won Gunfighter and Prestidigitator won Traditional. Tator was also the Overall Shoot-Off Winner.

Thursday was also Chili Cook day headed up by Chas. B. Wolfson and Apple Annie from Arizona. Everyone had plenty of chili to eat and vote on the best. Linda and CW Knight had the winning chili.

Friday started with Whiskey Hayes welcoming everyone, Papa Dave gave the Safety Meeting and Whiskey offered a prayer and led us in the Pledge before everyone headed to their 1st stage. We shoot 5 stages each day and once the days stages were finished and everyone had time to eat lunch we had the Team Match. It was also shot with all knock down targets. 3 person teams were drawn and they could start with either rifle or pistol, tag the next shooter and when they were done, tag the shotgun shooter who had 1 shotgun target plus any rifle or pistol targets still standing. I don't have the list but I think the winning team was Kathouse Kelly, Ocoee Red and Billy The Avenger.

The Friday Night Dinner was done by our onsite food vendor, Rolin' Chopsticks and it was really good. We also give out Side-Match awards and some additional door prizes. Donald Duke won a Henry .22 pump action rifle and every shooter present won a bottle of Jack Daniels Tennessee whiskey.

Saturday morning brought a bit cooler weather but we really had great weather all weekend. All the stages were fast and easy with ample opportunity to exceed your speed limit. The match winner had a total time of 165.35 seconds for 10 stages. After finishing and packing up, shooters had plenty of time to head back to their motels or RV's to get ready for the Banquet.

Our Banquet was catered by the Bell Buckle Cafe and the food was great as usual. We started the awards by recognizing all of the Category State Champions. Then we went to the Top 5 in each Category, stopping to give away 2 more guns, a few more special bottles of Jack Daniels and a Papa Dave Gun Cart.

The Men's Overall State Champion was Cumberland Drifter.

The Ladies Overall State Champion was Dew R Dye

The Men's Overall Champion was Lead Ringer

The Ladies Overall Champion was Slick's Sharp Shooter

The Top 10 Shooters were Lead Ringer, Blackhawk Henry, Prestidigitator, Christian Mortician, Cumberland Drifter, Double Nickle, Fast Eddie, Duke Skywalker, Billy The Avenger and Knob Creek Drover.

The Top 10 Ladies were Slick's Sharp Shooter, Dew R Dye, Kathouse Kelli, Shamrock Sadie, Dixie Pistols, Taco Belle, Dodge City Dixie, Miss Behavin', El Paso Susie and Two Step Net.

We had 37 shooters to shoot a Clean Math.
We had 3 posses and on a hot day this worked well. We were expecting a large bullet order to come in early afternoon so we wanted to be finished when it got in.

Papa Dave welcomed everyone and had our Safety Meeting, Branchwater Jack offered a Prayer and led us in the Pledge. Then we broke into posses and got started.

I was on posse 2 and we started at the Fort where we started with both hands touching the center table with pistols holstered, rifle and shotgun staged on the table. Gun order is shooters choice, rifle not last. With rifle starting on either end rifle target single tap R1, double tap R2, triple tap R3, quad tap R4. Shoot the pistol targets with the same instructions as the rifle targets, engage the 2 shotgun knock downs in any order. This was my best stage of the day, I shot it in 14.58 seconds.

Next we went to the Jersey Lilly where you began standing at the center window with hands touching window frame, pistols holstered, rifle staged in either outside window and shotgun staged in opposite outside window. At the beep with pistols shot from center window starting on either outside pistol target quad tap P1, double tap P2, quad tap P3. With the rifle shot from the staged location engage the rifle targets with the same instructions as the pistol targets. Shotgun from the staged location engage 2 KD's in any order move to the opposite outside window and engage the remaining 2 KD's. We were the first posse to shoot this stage and had to stop several times to kill wasps. They were so bad when I staged my shotgun they tried to build a nest in it while I was staging my rifle. Thankfully Widder was there with a can of wasp spray and was able to spray my shotgun and run them off.

Our 3rd stage was the Cantina where you started standing at the center table or the right window with pistols holstered, rifle and shotgun staged on the center table. Gun order was shooters choice, rifle not last. With pistols shot from the right window starting on either of the 2 pistol targets alternate single taps for 10 shots, rifle shot from center table using same instructions as pistols, with shotgun engage the 4 KD's in any order. I jacked out a rifle round but had a decent reload and managed a 21.06 second run.

Next we headed to the Cash Jackson Mine where you started standing between the left and right tables with a hand on each beam, pistols holstered, rifle staged on the right table and shotgun on the left table. At the beep move to the right table and starting on either end target double tap R1, single tap R2, double tap R3 and repeat sweep in the same direction. Move to the left table and shoot the pistol targets with same instructions as the rifle. Next engage 2 shotgun KD's from the left table then move to the starting position and engage the remaining 2 KD's. I shot this in a 20.09.

Our final stage was the Jail where you started standing in the office or the cell, rifle staged on office window shelf or the cell window shelf, shotgun staged on the office shelf and pistols holstered. Gun order is shooters choice, rifle not last. Rifle shot from staged location engage the center rifle target with 6 rounds then double tap each outside rifle target, pistols shot from the cell with the same instructions as the rifle and shotgun from the office window engage the 4 KD's in any order. I had a good run on this stage with a 19.31.

Cumberland Drifter was the Top Gun of the day, followed by Slick's Sharp Shooter (Ladies Top Gun), Widowmaker Hill, Double Nickle, Randy Saint Eagle, Ocoee Red, Reno Mustang, Ben T Iron, Dodge City Dixie and Branchwater Jack rounded out the Top 10.

Slick's Sharp Shooter was the Ladies Top Gun, followed by Dodge City Dixie, Alchemist Belle, TN Missy, Ara Tiest, Dr. Slick and Ida Shot'em.

Slick's Sharp Shooter had the fastest time on Stage 1, Cumberland Drifter was fastest on Stages 2, 3 and 4 and Double Nickle was fastest on Stage 5.

These were some really fast stages with 5 shooters having sub 100 second matches.

Cumberland Drifter, Donald Duke, Jailbreak Jake, Mule Face Mike, Nantahala Ned, Randy Saint Eagle and Widowmaker Hill all shot Clean Matches.
We went in Papa's SUV so I told him I'd pack light and he asked if I knew what light meant. I think he was surprised when we were able to get everything loaded and leave his rear rack carrier in my garage. We lost an hour due to Eastern time zone but still made it there shortly after noon with plenty of time to shoot the side-matches.

I headed to the Long Range Pistol while Papa met up with Dodge City Dixie, Dirty Nerdy, Reno Mustang and Brada Tat Tat to shoot the warm-up stage. The Long Range only had one person running rifle and pistol so he was really busy. My time rolled around and I went 5 for 5 so I made it into the 4 pm Shoot-off. I went down and joined the gang at the warm up stage to get a little match style practice in before the shoot-off. We then decided to walk the stages we'd be shooting Friday morning and got through a couple before I had to go to the shoot-off.

They did the shoot-off a little differently than I had seen before and I liked it. There were 5 or 6 folks that made the shoot-off and we all lined up side by side and shot one shot at a time at a 50 yard (more or less) target, if you missed and anyone else hit in that round you were out. After one or two rounds only Mongo and I were left. We went 10 rounds and they decided it could take all day so we moved to a target 10 yards farther back. At the new distance Mongo missed his first shot and I hit so I won the Long Range Pistol Match. Then I had to rush trying to beat the ran to pack my gear (the rain won).

Friday morning we started with Copperhead Joe welcoming everyone, then the Safety Meeting, Prayer, Pledge and we headed to our first stage. We started on 10 as far from the parking as you can get and when I got there I realized I'd left my shotgun belt in Papa's car. I started back to the car and fortunately Canoe Creek Kid was coming up on his 4-wheeler and he gave me a ride to get my gear, Thanks again Canoe Creek.

We started on Stage 10 looking down into the Outhouse, pistols holstered, rifle staged on the center table and shotgun stage on left table. You started with pistol or shotgun then shot rifle and ended with the other. Your line was There's a geriller in there, at the beep moved to preferred table, if starting on left engage the 4 shotgun knock downs, move to the rifle and shoot a progressive sweep on 2 targets, 1 on 1, 2 on 2, 3 on 1 and 4 on 2, moved to the pistols and shoot same sequence as rifle. I had a shotgun make-up on this and ended up with 25.46 seconds.

We were on posse 10 which consisted of Ara Tiest, Ben T. Iron, Black Jack Lee, Brada Tat Tat, C. W. Knight, Canoe Creek Kid, Cleve, Dead Lee Shooter, Dirty Nerdy, Dodge City Dixie, Fire N Fallback, Graywolf Tate, Hikes Point Hank, Let's Go, Mad Dog McCoy, Papa Dave, Randy Saint Eagle (me), Reno Mustang, Rio Drifter, Sidekick, Tennessee Tall and The Arizona Ranger. With 22 shooters we had a large posse but everyone worked and it went well.

Stage 9 was our last stage of the day With 10 rifle staged anywhere, 10 pistol holstered or staged and 4+ shotgun staged anywhere. The targets were on vertical racks with 2 on the bottom, one in the center and 2 on top. Start at any of the 5 openings with a mug in both hands, your line was "Hold my beer and watch this". At the beep you had to engage each pistol and rifle target 2 times each and engage the 4 shotgun KD's. You had to shoot at least 1 round through 4 of the 5 openings. This was my best stage of the day with a 20.42 seconds.

We had lunch afterwards and watched the team matches before deciding it would be a good idea to hit the Dairy Queen and have some desert before supper so Dodge City Dixie, Reno Mustang, Papa Dave and I found the DQ and chilled out for a while. Back at the range after a good pork dinner we had the side match awards and a Bluegrass Band.

Saturday morning brought on the final 5 stages and I got to the stage with all my gear this time. Our second stage of the day, stage 1 was my best stage of the day. You started with a gun or guns pointed downrange, with 10 rifle staged in any window, 10 pistol holstered, 6 shotgun staged in any window. Your line was "She's prettier than a mess of catfish", at the beep using all 4 openings for at least 1 round put at least 2 rounds on each of the 3 rifle and 3 pistol targets and engage the 6 shotgun KD's till down. I shot this in 22.05 seconds. Brada Tat Tat was blazing through the third stage of the day when he laid down a sweet rifle run, made a quick move to the left and his right pistol didn't move with him, it hung in the air like slow motion when he ran out from under it. That ended his match but not his Spirit as he stayed with us and worked the rest of the day.

After the last stage we headed back for lunch, did I mention this match included lunch and dinner on Friday and Saturday. After lunch they had the Man on Man Shoot-off and more Hillbilly games but Papa Dave and I decided to pack up our guns and chill out in Cumberland Drifter and Georgia Dew's camper with them, Cimarron Lil and Big 6 Henderson. It was nice just to relax and visit with friends on a hot afternoon.

After a really good fish dinner we had the Main Match Awards and they were very unique with a gun locally made out of coal dust and resin mounted to a plaque.

The Wartrace Regulators faired pretty well and Brad had a ton of fun, when he ran up to get the Spirit of the Game Award for our posse he dropped a plastic gun out of his pocket half way there.

Ara Tiest, 7th Lady Wrangler
Dirty Nerdy, 2nd Cowgirl
Perfecto Vaquera, 3rd Ladies B-Western

Sidekick was the Top Gun of the Match, (he was on Posse 10 and showed us how to shoot amazingly fast and clean) followed by Missouri Lefty, Vaquero Jake, Missouri Traveler, Blackhawk Henry, Cumberland Drifter, Cowboy Junkie, Three Cut, Billy The Avenger and Double Nickle rounded out the Top 10.

Sue Render was the Ladies Top Gun, followed by Shamrock Sadie, Turkey Legs, Dodge City Dixie, Renegade Roper, Miss Pistol Whipper, Dixie Pistols, Honey B Graceful, Lefty's Lucky Lady and Anita Margarita rounded out the Ladies Top 10.

It was really good to see Ringo ( by gawd) Fire, Korupt Karl, MoBetta, Digger, Rowdy Bates and others I hadn't seen in a while.

After the awards Blackwater and Milkbone provided the entertainment for the night along with a dance contest. There are somethings that you really don't want ingrained in your brain like this picture. by Krazy Kajun. So Cimarron Lil, Big 6 Henderson, Georgia Dew, Cumberland Drifter, Dodge City Dixie, Reno Mustang, Papa Dave and I decided to make another run to the DQ for desert. We asked Dirty and Brad if they wanted to go but Brad said he'd already had his DQ for the day.

This match had some of the stiffest competition you'll find anywhere short of EOT, with lots of current and former National and World Champions in attendance. Copperhead Joe, Miss Bo, Iron Maiden, Whiskey Creek Johnson and the many others put on a Great Match. If you're looking for a First Class Match with lots of competition and a weekend long party you need to put this one on your list. I suggest you send your 2017 application in early next year because I predict this will fill up early.
Papa Dave told them they were crazy to let me have the trailer overnight (he thinks I pack a bit heavy when traveling). Papa Dave got to my house bright and early on Fathers Day morning and we got his gear packed. Dixie and Reno weren't far behind him so we transferred their guns to the trailer, hooked it to their vehicle and we were off.

We made it to Shawnee Oklahoma the first day and got a good nights sleep before heading out again. Day 2 we meet up with Dirty Nerdy and Brada Tat Tat at the Big Texan Steakhouse in Amarillo Texas for a good meal and an interesting place. Seems like about an hour or so past this you pass a huge cattle feedlot, I suggest you have the windows rolled up and the ac on recirculate before you get there and for a while after you pass it. I'm sure it smells like money to the folks that own it but it has a different smell to me.

We had an uneventful trip and made it to the Best Western in Moriarty New Mexico after 4pm. We needed to unload our clothes out of the trailer because we leave it at the range for the week. EOT does a great job and has 24 hour security so there is no problem leaving your gear there. We got to Founders Ranch a little after 5pm, too late to check in but we were able to set up the trailer.

We saw and talked to T A Chance (Match Director) and told him we were going to walk the stages so he went into his office and got us Lassiter's (Co-Match Director) book so we could see the scenarios. After getting everything squared away and checking the stages we decided to head to Chili Hills for dinner. This was one of 4 or 5 trips there during our stay. They have good food, plenty of it, homemade pies and give SASS members a 15% discount. We also found out during our stay that the Pizza Barn has an excellent pizza and we made a couple of trips there.

Tuesday morning Dixie woke up with her eyes swelled shut so she and Reno found a Doctor nearby and had it checked out. Papa Dave and I rode to the range with Dirty Nerdy and Brada Tat Tat to check in and sign up for a midday Warm-up Match. We had time to get our gear ready and take a quick look at a few vendors before the Safety Meeting. We shot Stages 1-4 and since there was no one waiting for the stages we shot 2 and 4 twice, just changing the scenarios. Here is a video Dirty Nerdy took of me during the Warm-Up Match. Dixie and Reno made it to the range a little after noon and Dixie's eyes were open enough she could see to shoot. They shot the late wave Warm-up on stages 5-8. We also ran into Purly and Two Step Net (they were keeping their cart in the trailer so we saw them most every day) and had dinner with them. Then we had to go to the Dairy Queen for ice cream, if you want to travel with Papa Dave you'll have to make a stop or 3 at the DQ.

Wednesday morning we headed back to the range for Side Matches. Dixie's eyes seemed to still be improving but they were still pretty red with some swelling. They had a stage set up with all knockdown targets to raise money for the SASS Scholarship Fund and we each shot it a couple of times. They also had an old timey shooting gallery wagon and we tried it. We tried Speed Pistol before I ran into Lassiter and he was needing some more help so I ran the Rimfire Side Match for the last 2 hours. We walked stages 5-8 to see what we'd be shooting first and then headed to the Opening Ceremonies. They introduced many of the pards involved in making this happen and had a presentation of flags from every country represented. I should have taken notes but I think Cowgirls and Cowboys were there from at least 8 countries. This was slightly delayed by a small flood that I'm sure they were happy to get it with the Dog Head fire looming nearby.

Thursday started the Main Match Stages and we shot the late wave. Due to the rain the night before we had to get to the range early to do maintenance and last minute repairs. We got everything taken care of and went to test fire Reno's rifle and found it had a problem. After several trips back and forth to the trailer (the elevation at the range is nearly 7000 feet so it doesn't take many fast trips to see what kind of shape you're in) there was still a problem and it was time for the Safety Meeting. After the Safety Meeting we had 45 minutes till the start of our match and Reno and Brad made one last trip to the trailer and were able to get the rifle working. We were all sweating bullets when Reno shot the first stage but his rifle ran great all weekend.

We were on Posse 31 with Amaduelist as our Posse Marshall, and Blackfish Kid, Brada Tat Tat, Broken Blade, Dirty Nerdy, Dodge City Dixie, Holy Smoke Harmon, Jail Break Jake, Jersey Sue (Pecos Pav was supposed to be shooting but ended up having to make a stay in the hospital on the way so he decide not to shoot), Lady Gator, Lightnin' Hawk, Marshall Stone, Papa Dave, Ponderosa Pete, Randy Saint Eagle, Reno Mustang, Revelator, Rocky Meadows and Wigley Down Yonder made up our entire posse. Dixie's eyes were still improving but she had a primer that didn't go off in a pistol on the very first stage. We started on Stage 7 with 4 pistol knockdowns, 4 rifle knockdowns and 4 shotgun knockdowns and it was my best stage of the day with a 20.91. Stage 6 had one of two moving targets for the match and I let Reno grab his rifle and fire a shot before realizing he hadn't activated the lever for the mover (a "P"). We finished for the day, had a Posse Picture made and just as we got back to the trailer it started to rain again.

Friday we shot the midday wave but still had to get to the range early to do maintenance and load ammo blocks we didn't get done the night before due to the rain. We shot stages 9-12 starting on 11 and it was my best stage of the match. We started at a window with the rifle in hand, shotgun staged inside the doorway, at the beep we shot a 1-2-4-2-1 in any order, restaged the rifle, ran inside the doorway and between there and the downrange table shot the 4 shotgun knockdowns, from the downrange table shot the pistols same as the rifle. I shot this in an 18.87. Dixie's eyes were still improving and Reno had a better but Papa Dave had a couple of misses. After our stages we checked out more vendors, I spent a while talking Bob Mernickle about his new HP Series holsters and shotgun belt. We then walked the final 4 stages to see what we would be doing Saturday morning.

Saturday morning we shot the early wave so we had to leave the motel before breakfast to get everything ready and be at the Stage 3 by 7:15. Stage 3 had the other moving target (a swinger) of the match. On this stage you had 2 stationary targets on either side of the swinger, 2 shotgun knockdowns on either side of the rifle targets and 5 pistol targets to the right in front of another table. You started next to a building with both hands on the lever to activate the swinger, rifle and shotgun staged on the table and pistols holstered. At the beep, activate the swinger and sweep the 5 rifle targets (which includes the swinger) then engage the swinger 5 times, shoot the 4 shotgun kd's, move past the silhouette to the other table and sweep the 5 pistol targets then put 5 on the center pistol target. This was my best stage of the day with a 21.83. I didn't realize it until I was writing this that the first stage was my best stage each day. Maybe I got nervous after the first stage?

The last day was nerve wracking for me, going into it clean and on stage 4, I jacked out a rifle round and had to reload it and on stage 2 our final stage of the match my shotgun shells split on my 2nd load and I had to throw them down and grab 2 more. I did manage to keep it together and shoot a "Clean" Match.
We had the rest of the day to finish checking out vendors and get a little rest before coming back to the Saturday night party to see who made the Top Gun and Sweet 16 Shoot-Off.

Sunday morning we checked out of the Motel, headed to the range, packed up our guns and gear, hooked up the trailer and headed off to watch the Shoot-Offs. They started with Wild Bunch Top 8 and Wild Bunch Ladies Top 8. Then the Top 16 Cowboys and Sweet 16 Cowgirls started alternating between Cowgirls and Cowboys. Here are some Videos By Billy The Avenger of the shoot-offs. #2 by Billy, # 3 by Billy of Cody James, the Men's Shoot-Off Winner against Slick's Sharp Shooter, The Ladies Shoot-Off winner. Slick's Sharp Shooter won it, I think when Cody knocked down the wrong stop plate.

Next was what we were all waiting on, the Awards Ceremony and the Wartrace Regulators faired pretty well.

Dirty Nerdy 9th Lady Wrangler
Jail Break Jake 12th Duelist
Brada Tat Tat 18th Gunfighter
Reno Mustang 6th Senior Gunfighter
Dodge City Dixie 3rd Ladies Senior

When they called out Doc Roy L Pain for 2nd place I though for a minute I was going to fall out, I was extremely excited. After getting home I found out that after 3 days of shooting I beat Doc by 1.88 seconds.

Missouri Lefty was the Top Gun of the match and Overall World Champion, followed by Matt Black, Duke Skywalker, Pecos Nick (shooting Duelist), Waterloo, Cody James, Creek County Kid, Damascus Jon, Deuce Stevens and Lead Ringer rounded out the Top 10.

Sass Kicker was the Ladies Top Gun and Ladies Overall World Champion, followed by Texas Tiger, Hey You, Morguns Ann Ammo, Spinning Sally, Panhandle Cowgirl, Shamrock Sadie, Slick's Sharp Shooter, Bonnie Macfarlane and Belinda Belle rounded out the Ladies Top 10.

I have to Thank Misty Moonshine, T A Chance, Lassiter and everyone involved in making the 35th End Of Trail a Great One.

Thank You so much to Reno Mustang and Dodge City Dixie for hauling Papa Dave and I out there, I would have never won my Category without all your help and encouragement. Thanks also to Papa Dave, Dirty Nerdy and Brada Tat Tat for all your encouragement. And I have to Thank Ramblin' Rebel (Grady Jones of The Collection Connection) for keeping me in primers and powder even when they were scarce. He also built my first new SASS rig and has helped me find the guns I wanted for over 30 years.

We had a great trip to EOT and for some reason it was even better on the way home. While there, I saw tacked to a rail at a stage How to succeed at Cowboy Action Shooting; Practice More , Shoot Faster, Don't Miss, I think that sums it up if you add one last thing, If You Don't Go You Can't Win.
I had to work from 4am to 9am and got to the range while they were shooting the first stage so I missed the Welcome by Whiskey Hayes, a Travelin' Regulators report by Dodge City Dixie and the Safety Meeting by Papa Dave. We didn't totally miss the rain but only had to contend with it for about 1/2 of one stage.

We shot the Cantina and stages on the hill except the Cemetery . Our posse started on the Cantina where you had 3 rifle targets, 3 pistol targets and our new clay tosser with throws the clay bird around 15' up, nearly twice as high as our old one. Gun order was shooters choice, rifle not last, targets were set one above the other and one to right center of the other two. You single tapped the targets for 10 rounds in a circle either direction for pistols and rifle and shot the tosser and the clay bird in the air. Pa Faux smoked this stage with an awesome 16.22. This was my fastest stage also with a 18.06.

Next we shot the Wells Fargo Bank where you started at the front door with rifle staged in the right rifle rack, pistols holstered and shotgun on the barrel outside. 5 pistol and rifle targets 1-3-2-3-1 sweep. Gun order was rifle, pistols and end with 6 shotgun knock downs. Purly blazed this stage with a 22.65.

In Grafton's you started standing at either window with pistols holstered and shot from the left window, rifle staged at and shot from either window and shotgun staged at the right window. Gun order is shooters choice, rifle not last. Start standing at either window, 4 shotgun kd's, 3 rifle and 3 pistol targets shot single tap 1, double tap 2, double tap 3, double tap 1, double tap 2 and single tap 3. Cumberland Drifter was fastest on this with a 17.06.

At the Line Shack we had 4 pistol, 4 rifle and 4 shotgun targets with pistols holstered, rifle staged on center shelf and shotgun staged in either gun box. You start touching the empty gun box with both hands, gun order was shooters choice, rifle not last. At the beep rifle shot in a 1-2-3-4-1-4-3-2-1-4 sweep, pistols shot the same way and 4 shotgun kd's in any order. Cumberland Drifter ran this one in a 19.15.

Our last stage was the Gallows where you started with hands on the front rail, pistols holstered, shotgun in one gun box and rifle staged in the opposite. At the beep you shoot the 4 pistol targets in a 3-2-2-3 sweep starting and ending on the center target. You shoot the rifle targets in the same order and end with 4 kd's in any order. Cumberland Drifter also blazed this one with a 17.65

Cumberland Drifter was the Top Gun of the day, followed by Purly, Randy Saint Eagle, Double Nickle, Papa Dave, Blackjack Lee, Branchwater Jack, Reno Mustang, Pa Faux and Dodge City Dixie rounded out the Top 10.

Dodge City Dixie was the Ladies Top Gun, followed by Doc Kay B May.

Clean Matches were shot by Cumberland Drifter, Deadwood Miner, Georgia Slick, Grey Horse, Pa Faux, Papa Oso, Purly and Randy Saint Eagle.
I for one really enjoyed the stages Whiskey Hayes wrote. Some up them made you think quite a bit to get them in your head, but if you always shoot stages you don't have to think about it can really mess you up if you travel to a range that has some odd stages.
We loaded down the wagon, hitched up the team and headed to Covington, Georgia for the

Georgia State Championship.

We had an uneventful trip until the new fangled map (GPS) tried to put us in downtown Atlanta. We rolled into South River Gun Club in time to check in and McKenzie River Drifter took us for a ride in his buckboard to show us where the long range was. I'm glad he took us for a ride because he told us Long Range didn't start till 1pm and I had planned to start there first to try the Long Range Pistol, he saved us a lot of walking.

We unloaded and headed down the hill to the range in time to shoot a few Side Matches before the Warm Up Match. We got down to 2 shooters left and it started to rain but we covered our guns and got through it. We stood under a canopy for a BS session while waiting for the rain to stop. At 4pm I had to go to the Posse Marshall walk thru and after that we met up with Dodge City Dixie and Reno Mustang and went over the next days stages. Later we all met up with Alchemist Belle, Donald Duke and Branchwater Jack for Dinner.

Friday after the Safety Meeting, a prayer and the pledge we headed to Stage 9 to meet up with our Posse. Posse 9 consisted of Regulator Rude, Badlands Barry, Reno Mustang, Dodge City Dixie, Pilgrim Joe, Hopalong Mac, El Viejo Lobo, Laredo Lou, Pe De, Alchemist Belle, Donald Duke, Branchwater Jack, Tombstone John, Rider in the Sky and Randy Saint Eagle. I have to say we had a Great Posse, everyone worked and made it a very enjoyable weekend.

Stage 9 started with the rifle and shotgun staged at position 1, pistols holstered. Starting position was SASS default, at the beep you shot a Progressive Sweep with the rifle, shot 4 knock downs with the shotgun anywhere between position 1 and position 2 where you made the shotgun safe. You finished with a Progressive Sweep with the pistols. This was my best stage and I think I was so excited it went well, when I got to stage 10 I missed a rifle target. Stage 10 had 4 shooting positions and 6 shotgun KD's. We shot stages 9, 10, 1 (3 positions), 2 (4 positions), 3 (3 positions) and 4 (the only Stand and Deliver stage in the match). I really enjoyed the movement on the stages. God blessed us with a mostly dry day that was much better than the forecast.

After the Main Match stages they had a Couples Match and a Team Match but we decided to stow our gear and eat some lunch instead of shooting any more. 6 stages in a day is about all I want to shoot most days.

Saturday morning we finished up the final 4 stages starting on Stage 5 (3 shooting positions), 6 (2 positions), 7 (2 positions) and 8 (4 positions) so we had plenty of movement on the last day as well. After the shooting was finished we went down to check out the vendors and found a freezer full of Dilly bars thanks to DQ (Dairy Queen) Jones. The afternoon was time for the Man on Man (or Woman) Shoot-Off. Due to threatening rain we decided to eat lunch it the Club House and share some lies with Tombstone John, Hopalong Mac, El Viejo Lobo, Dodge City Dixie and Reno Mustang. I found out that Hopalong was smoking me on one stage right up until he had a squib load (that Lobo loaded), that's his story and he's sticking to it.
We shot the newest stages and they all had reasonable movement except the Fort which was "Stand and Deliver". While the weather was a little cool when folks started to arrive it didn't take long to warm up and be a fantastic day.

Double Nickle was the Top Gun of the day followed by Cumberland Drifter, Papa Dave, Randy Saint Eagle, Hurricane Charly, Branchwater Jack, Sunflower Kid, CW Knight, Alchemist Bell ( Ladies Top Gun) and Blackjack Lee rounded out the Top 10.

Alchemist Belle was the Ladies Top Gun followed by TN Missy, Ida Shot'em and Ricochet Ruthie.

We had 7 to shoot a Clean Match (no misses or penalties), Deadwood Miner, Dobber, Double Nickle, Hardluck Hudgens, Papa Dave, Randy Saint Eagle and Sunflower Kid. Each year Wartrace recognizes the Wartrace Regulator who shoot the most clean club matches. In the event of a tie the deciding factor will be the one who shot the most matches (the most chances to mess up), so far we have not yet had to use the tie breaker.

The 2015 recipient of the Wartrace Regulators Eagle Eye Award was Frank Buckshot, good shooting Frank.
13 Cowboys rode into Wartrace for our final match of the year. No Cowgirls made it to this one and we missed them. Papa Dave started us with a brief Safety Meeting and after a prayer and the pledge we headed out to shoot.

This match was free to all who came out to join us on a really nice December day. We had sunshine, very little wind and 40's. The Cowboys shot the same stages we shot on the December 5th match and for a little twist the Wild Bunch used their 191l 's for the rifle targets also. For each stage they had to have 4 magazines minimum. Most said it felt funny walking to the line without a rifle. They all seemed to enjoy it but there were more misses than usual.

Cumberland Drifter was the Top Gun of the day followed by Randy Saint Eagle, Grey Horse, Gun Butcher and PeDe rounded out the Top 5 Cowboys.

Frank Buckshot was the Wild Bunch Top Gun and he was Clean up to the last stage. Frank was followed by CW Knight, Dobber and Papa Dave.

Grey Horse and Nantahala Ned shot "Clean Matches".
Since Sheriff Frank Canton retired we haven't had any official law in town. It was a beautiful day for December, about 40 when we started shooting and around 60 when we finished. When you combine this with sunshine and no wind it was great.

Papa Dave started us out with a brief Safety Meeting, Whiskey Hayes welcomed everyone, Jagged Rock offered a Prayer and led us in the Pledge. The posse lists were read and we headed out to shoot. This month we're shooting Wells Fargo, Cemetery, Grafton's, Line Shack and The Gallows.

We had one first time at Wartrace Shooter, Maddog McCoy who said he though he could come 600 miles from his home range and not be recognized but a couple of us recognized him right away. It's really hard to go unnoticed with a white holster rig.

I was on Posse 2 consisting of Capt. A O Brittles, Gringo Gordo, Demented Frenchman, Nantahala Ned, El Viejo Lobo, Jagged Rock, Imis Twohofon, Dobber, Papa Oso, Hopalong Mac, Whiskey Hayes, Frank Buckshot, Gunbutcher, Sunflower Kid and Randy Saint Eagle.

I had a a pretty good day, I started with 1 miss at Grafton's, ran decent at the Line Shack and then had a train wreck at the Gallows. I jacked out 2 rifle rounds and then missed a pistol shot. I got back on track at Wells Fargo and the Cemetery was my best stage. Here we had 2 rifle,5 plate racks, 2 pistols targets and 2 shotgun kd's. Gun order was shooters choice, rifle not last. At the beep knock down the 10 rifle plates(any left standing can be made up with rifle or shotgun), 2 shotgun kd's, then with the pistols 4 on P1, 5 on P2 then 1 on P1, I ran this stage in 16.72 seconds.

Papa Dave was the Top Gun of the day, followed by Reno Mustang, Randy Saint Eagle, Dodge City Dixie (Ladies Top Gun), Tabasco Jot, Sunflower Kid, Brada Tat Tat, Garnet Gal, Scrub Oak Willie and Pe De rounded out the Top 10.

Dodge City Dixie was the Ladies Top Gun, followed by Garnet Gal, Dirty Nerdy and Ida Shot'em.

Frank Buckshot, Gringo Gordo, Hopalong Mac, Papa Oso, Scrub Oak Willie, Tabasco Jot and Whiskey Hayes all shot Clean Matches. We give out an Eagle Eye award for the Wartrace Regulator who shoots the most Wartrace Matches Clean and there is only one match left this year to decide it.
Papa Dave gave a brief Safety Meeting and Whiskey Hayes welcomed everyone then offered a Prayer and led us in the Pledge. We then split into 2 posses and headed to the line.

I was on Posse 1 with Dead Lee Shooter, Double Nickle, Dodge City Dixie, Reno Mustang, Papa Dave, Brada Tat Tat, Blackjack Lee, Dirty Nerdy, Nantahala Ned and Ida Shot'em. While the posse was small everyone worked and we had a great posse. We were blessed with good weather, while it was a little cool the rain stayed away.

Dead Lee Shooter was the Top Gun of the day, followed by Double Nickle, Dodge City Dixie (Top Lady), Reno Mustang, Randy Saint Eagle, Papa Dave, Whiskey Hayes, Brada Tat Tat, Frank Buckshot and Blackjack Lee rounded out the Top 10.
The Regulators Reckoning, Tennessee State Championship is in the books now and I think it was a good one. Preparation for this match started shortly after last years match was finished and I think all the work by everyone involved paid off.

The match actually started last weekend for 23 of us who shot the workers shoot-thru. We shot in the rain on Saturday making it the 4th year in a row we've shot at least part of the shoot-thru in the rain.

The Side Matches started on Thursday morning to some great weather. We had the usual Speed Matches, added this year were Derringer and Pocket Pistol. We also had Cut The Rope and Long Range as well as Black Powder, Wild Bunch and Warm Up Matches. Again this years Side-Match theme was Are You Tough Enough To Wear Pink and with Mrs. Pleasant's help taking the collection jar around we were able to collect $388 for the American Cancer Society. Thank you to everyone who donated to a worthy cause.

After the Side Matches were finished we had a Man on Man Shoot-off that anyone can enter. We have the only Shoot-off I'm aware of with 3 Categories based on shooting style. We had Traditional, Gunfighter, Duelist and Ladies. Sidekick was Top Traditional, Unpleasant was Top Gunfighter, Randy Saint Eagle was Top Duelist and Shamrock Sadie was the Top Lady. These names went back into the draw for finals and when all shooting was done, Sidekick was the Shoot-Off Top Gun.

The Chili Cook-off was going on at the same time and I think CW Knight's wife Linda won it.

Friday morning started with Whiskey Hayes welcoming the shooters. Papa Dave gave the Safety Meeting, then Whiskey Hayes offered a prayer and led us in the Pledge. Then everyone headed to their stages for the first 5 stages of the match. One reason for a shoot-thru the weekend before is because we use Berm Marshall's to read and explain the scenarios. There were no changes from what the book said so if you had a plan after reading the book you could go with it.

After each posse had finished their first 5 stages we broke for lunch, prepared by Rollin' Chopstix, who also had breakfast available every morning, then we had a Team Match. Everyone who wanted to shoot put their badges in a slop jar (I told everyone it was ok it hadn't been used in awhile), 3 person teams were drawn with 1 shooting 10 pistol, 1 shooting 10 rifle and 1 with 2+ shotgun. We had some light sprinkles during Team Match but they didn't amount to much and didn't last long. The winning Team consisted of Duck River, Sixgun Schwaby and Lead Ringer. Most everyone wanted to shoot some more so we put the badges back in the pot and drew again. This time the Team of Missouri Traveler, Shamrock Sadie and Boben Weev won.

Next we had dinner on the range, again prepared by Rollin' Chopstix. Then we had Side Match Awards and door prizes including 122 bottles of Jack Daniels. Where else but the Tennessee State Championship could you find 122 bottles of Jack Daniels on the prize table?

In the Long Range Matches Wes Outlaw won Single Shot Rifle on bags and on sticks, Lever Action Rifle Caliber on bags and sticks and the Lever Action Pistol Caliber on Sticks. Scattergun Kid won Optical rifle on bags. Dirtwood Dobber won Black Powder Rifle Caliber and Lever Action Pistol Caliber off hand. Duck River won the Lever Action Pistol Caliber off bags.

We had 24 Cowgirls and Cowboys to "Cut The Rope", Last Kiss did it with first shot from a pistol, Keystone, Llew Silverhand and Randy Saint Eagle did it with the first shot with a rifle.

It started raining about half way through the awards and continued off and on through the night but quit early Saturday morning and didn't rain anymore. The good Lord blessed us with a dry match.

Saturday morning brought the start of everyone's final 5 stages. I had to say my goodbyes early to as many as I could as I had to leave to attend the wedding of a niece. I also had to bring the awards to Cumberland Drifter and I'd like to really thank him and PeDe for setting them up at the Banquet Hall.

This years Banquet was at the recently enlarged Bell Buckle Cafe's banquet facility and I'm sure the food was fantastic as always. The Main Match Awards as well as some bigger door prizes were given out at the Banquet.
Cumberland Drifter, Papa Dave and I headed east to Cleveland, TN to the Ocoee Rangers 2nd Annual Lead Mine Valley Shootout. We drove through rain to get there but we ran out of it just past Chattanooga and didn't see any more till we started home. Once there we met up with Dodge City Dixie, Reno Mustang, Whiskey Hayes, Alchemist Belle, Branchwater Jack, Donald Duke, Doc Kay B May, TN Missy, Gunbutcher, Grey Horse, Tom Cassidy and Pilgrim Joe.

94 shooters were not deterred by the threat of rain and came out to join in the fun. Ocoee Red welcomed everyone. Then after the Safety Meeting, a prayer and the pledge, they read off the posse assignments and we got started.

Unpleasant wrote some fast and close stages. Everything was very hitable but gave you plenty of opportunity to get over confident and outrun your ability. There was one stage with a zip line rifle target that was fun. Some of the stages were really fast for the top shooters, with some 14, 15 and 16 second stage times posted.

We were on posse 4 which consisted of; Pleasant (Posse Marshall),Unpleasant, Mrs. Pleasant, Papa Dave, Cumberland Drifter, Alchemist Belle, Branchwater Jack, Donald Duke, Possum, Parlor House Pearl, El Camino, Pistoleer, Whiskey Hayes, Randy Saint Eagle, Tom Cassidy, Bama Kid and Dirt Road Dude. I apologize if I have forgotten anyone.

After the match we had hamburgers, hot dogs, beans, slaw and lots of homemade desserts. They gave a way lots of door prizes and then started with the awards.

Last Thursday morning I hitched up the team, loaded the wagon and headed to Tombstone John's homestead. Once we loaded his gear we headed out to Sparta, Illinois to the first SASS Central Divisional Championship.

We rolled in just after noon and unpacked our gear and ran into Dodge City Dixie and Reno Mustang who had just finished the Warm-Up Match. We headed to sign in when Mose drove by and said he needed me to go through the Posse Marshall walk thru, so while John checked in I did the walk thru. After finishing I met up with John to shoot some side matches. Mose also had some 5 Stand going on but I didn't make it to that. After the Side Matches were finished we met up with Jailbreak Jake and headed to, I think it was called, Southside Ribs for dinner.

Friday Morning we met up with Dirty Nerdy, Brada Tat Tat, Dodge City Dixie, Reno Mustang,C W Knight, Garnet Gal and Scrub Oak Willie, for the Opening Ceremonies. All together there were 10 of us from Wartrace and we were split on 3 separate posses. We were treated to a harmonica rendition of the National Anthem and I'm sorry to say I cant remember the Cowboy's name who played it. Mose offered a prayer and we headed to our starting stages.

John and I were on Posse 3 consisting of Digger Mike, Garnet Gal, Hondo Tucker, Jailbreak Jake, Jimmy Reno, Kid Ziggy, MoBetta, Panhandle Ranger, Randy Saint Eagle, Reno, Scrub Oak Willie, Shadow Kid, Stroud (our Posse Marshal), Tombstone John and Travelin' Kid. There was only 15 of us but we had a great Posse, everyone worked and all jobs got done without any problems.

Our posse shot the first 5 stages on Friday, they were pretty straight forward with a fair amount of movement and one Stand and Deliver stage. I had 2 misses on day 1 and slipped the hammer and had to go all the way around once with a pistol but all in all I felt ok for the day.

Mose always has something interesting and after the 5 main stages he had a Man on Man where you finished with a dueling tree and a shotgun and as many shells as you wanted to bring. I got beat in the first round but I shot so many times I could hardly touch my shotgun.

Next we had a Team Match where 5 person teams played Horse, if one person made a shot the other teams had to make the same shot or get a letter. The hardest shot I personally had to make was a left handed rifle shot because I can't close my right eye without my left one shutting as well. It was very hard to get my head far enough across the stock to sight with my right eye but I finally did it and made the shot. The most interesting shot was by Shamrock Sadie doing the Annie Oakley shot with a rifle sighting through a mirror. Sadie made the shot but so did Six Gun Schwaby for our team. In the end our team consisting of Six Gun Schwaby, Lead Ringer, Longshot Seth, Blastin' Brad and myself won the Team Match.

Friday night we had a Cowboy Carnival with lots of carnival games to play and corn dogs, curly fries and ice cream to eat. There was a stretch raffle with lots of stuff including several guns.

Saturday morning our posse shot stages 6 thru 10 and some of them had a little more movement but all were fun. I struggled more on Saturday with a couple of shotgun make-ups, slipped the hammer on 2 shots and had to go around, and jacked out a rifle round on 2 stages with a pistol miss also on one of them. My only good stage was our last stage, 7, and it went well.

Saturday night was the Banquet and awards and we started with some really good turkey, ham and all the fixins. Next were the side match awards and I was lucky enough to win the Speed Shotgun Double Barrel with a 9.28 on 7 targets. There were several more guns given away throughout the night.

Wartrace fared pretty well with Dodge City Dixie being the top Wartrace Regulator.
Dodge City Dixie 1st Ladies B-Western and 22nd Overall
Randy Saint Eagle 1st Senior Duelist
Reno Mustang 3rd Senior Gunfighter
C.W. Knight 3rd Silver Senior
Jailbreak Jake 2nd Duelist
Tombstone John 5th Silver Senior
Scrub Oak Willie 4th Senior Duelist
Brada Tat Tat 5th Gunfighter and a Clean Match
Dirty Nerdy 4th Ladies Wrangler
Garnet Gal 4th Ladies Senior

This was the first SASS Central Division Championship and Frisco Red was the Men's Champion and Miss Pistol Whipper was the Ladies Champion

Lead Ringer was the Top Gun of the match, followed by Duke Skywalker, Frisco Red, James Samuel Pike, Copperhead Joe, Don Jorge, Quaker Hill Bill, Dusty Darryl, Indiana Loose Cannon and Oklahoma Dee rounded out the Top 10.

Shamrock Sadie was the Ladies Top Gun followed by Appaloosa Amy, Dodge City Dixie, Dew R Dye, El Paso Suzie, Renegade Roper, Miss Pistol Whipper, Snazzy McGee, Posey's Lefty's Lady and Miss Hitem rounded out the Ladies Top 10.
It once again confirms my belief that the Good Lord enjoys a good Cowboy match. It was drizzling rain when I got to the range but quit well before match time, After the match we had time to get guns put away and then it started raining.

Cumberland Drifter and Dodge City Dixie were on fire today with only 8 seconds between them for 1st and 2nd and 17 seconds ahead of 3rd. For the Wild Bunch CW Knight finished 19 seconds ahead of 2nd place.

One thing I was excited to see was that out of the 21 Cowboy shooters a full third, 7, were Cowgirls. It sure is nice to see that number increasing over the years.

Cumberland Drifter was the Top Gun of the day followed by Dodge City Dixie (Top Cowgirl), Reno Mustang, Randy Saint Eagle, Gun Butcher, Pe De, Alchemist Belle, Big Six Henderson, Tombstone John and Brada Tat Tat rounded out the Top 10.

Dodge City Dixie was the Top Cowgirl followed by Alchemist Belle, Dirty Nerdy, TN Missy, Ida Shot'em, Doc Kay B May and Georgia Dew.

CW Knight was the Wild Bunch Top Gun followed by Branchwater Jack, Frank Buckshot, Papa Dave, Demented Frenchman and Tom Horn.

Clean Matches were shot by Blue Wolf (shooting black powder cap and ball) Pilgrim Joe and Ida Shot'em.
While I forgot about crossing into Eastern time when deciding what time to leave we still got there in time for the Side Matches. We met up with Dodge City Dixie, Reno Mustang, Cumberland Drifter, Georgia Dew, CW Knight , Linda, Dirty Nerdy, Brada Tat Tat and a host of other Cowboys and Cowgirls.

Papa Dave, Drifter and the others headed for the warm up stages and I went on up to the Long Range Pistol events. This is the only place I have been that offers a Long Range Wrong Hand Pistol event. This has to be shot Duelist style and with your weak hand at a 50 yard target. They also had Long Range pistol shot on the same target with any unsupported style and 1911 Long Range pistol also shot on the same target any unsupported style. There were several folks shooting the different classes, you could try as many times as you wanted for the highest number of hits out of a 5 shot string, Then at 4 pm they had the shoot-off where you got one try to get as many hits as you could with 5 shots.

I got in line with a 1911 first and was able to hit 5 for 5 to make the shoot-off. Next I tried my Vaquero in the standard Long Range event and got on the trigger too hard on the third shot and fired before I was on target and ended up with 4 for 5 on that run. I got back in line, settled down and hit 5 for 5 on the 2nd try making that shoot-off. Next I lined up for the Wrong Hand event, I always shoot Duelist style for anything precision so I felt like I would be fairly comfortable with this as well and I was able to hit 5 of 5 making that shoot-off as well.

I then went over to the warm up stages and joined Drifter, Papa and the others until time for the shoot-offs. I ran through a couple of stages just to get the feel of the stages and then just relaxed a little waiting for 4 pm. When I went for the shoot-off I found out I was the only one to hit 5 for 5 in in Wrong Hand Pistol and 1911 Pistol, so the only shoot-off was in the Long Range Pistol and there were several folks in it. Several folks hit 4 out of 5 but I was the only one to hit 5 of 5 in the shoot-off.

After the Side Matches were over we had the start to the Hillbilly Olympics with a bucket brigade with buckets full of holes so everyone got pretty wet, then a string/ring game and a pot luck dinner.

Friday morning brought the start of the Main Match with Copperhead Joe welcoming everyone, after the Safety Meeting, Prayer and Pledge we headed to the stages to get started. I was on Posse 4 along with Posse Marshall, Big 6 Henderson, Ramblin' Royce, Loco Linda, Papa Dave, Trail Bandit, Shaddai Vaquero, Perfecto Vaquera, Vaquero Jake, Dodge City Dixie, Reno Mustang, Kid Ray, Sue Render, Captain Grouch, Hoss Blocker, Elm Savannah, CW Knight, Long Shot Seth and Prairie Cole( I hope I haven't forgotten anyone).
They had some good stages set up and Iron Maiden did a lot of nice artwork on them. After shooting our first 5 stages we had a hot dog and fried bologna lunch. Then we had 3 person teams going head to head on a Texas Star for the rifle, plate rack for the pistol and 4 knock downs for the shot gun. You could pick your own teams and each had to have at least one lady shooter on each team. I shot on a team with Jackelope Jasper and Anita Margarita and then on one with Perfecto Vaquera and Kid Ziggy, it was a lot of fun, unfortunately I cannot remember who was on the winning team.

After supper we the Side match awards and a Bluegrass band playing. All I remember about the Side Match Awards was CW Knight won his Category in Wild Bunch and I won the 3 Long Range Pistol events I shot in.

Saturday morning brought out the final 5 stages and they were as good as the first 5 however I didn't shoot them nearly as well. Several of us had more issues on the final 5. The weather forecast was not too good for the match but God blessed us with no rain during shooting times for the entire weekend.
Again lunch was provided and then they had Man on Man Shoot-Offs. Papa Dave and I decided to skip the Shoot-Off and cool off back at the bunk house.

Saturday night was Fish Fry night and it was just as good as it was in 2012 when I was there. The Main Match Awards followed and Wartrace fared very well I think.
Papa Dave started us off with a Safety Meeting and next I was able to present Papa Oso with the 2014 Eagle Eye award for shooting the most Clean Matches at Wartrace in 2014. This was Papa Oso's 3rd time to win this award, he shoots lots of Clean Matches, congratulations Papa Oso.
SASS excepts nominations for a SASS Regulator badge for cowboys and cowgirls who go above and beyond to promote SASS, their home club and Cowboy Action Shooting in general. It takes a lot of signatures on a petition before SASS will recognize someone. We have 1 shooter who has been a big part in our club and in several other clubs before he moved to our area. He has also designed and built products to help cowboy action shooters and is always willing to help anyone getting started or just wanting to get better in Cowboy Action Shooting.
It was a great honor and privilege for me to get to present PAPA DAVE with his Regulator Badge. I'd like to thank Dodge City Dixie for getting the ball rolling on this, Amaduelist for picking up the award at End Of Trail and mailing it to me from New Mexico so I'd be sure to have it this weekend. I'd also like to thank everyone who had a part in making this happen and keeping it a secret from Papa Dave, I think he was really surprised.

This was a day of celebration and Whiskey Hayes also announced today was Blue Boy's 96th birthday, we think he is the oldest active SASS member, Blackwater and Shotgun Schoolmarm brought a cake and we celebrated with cake after the match was over.

Back to the match, after the Safety Meeting Whiskey Hayes offered a prayer and led us in the Pledge. Then the posse lists were read and we got started.

This year like last we had an exploding target to shoot, off the clock, at the Corral. Whiskey Hayes had his 9417 rifle there to shoot it with. That little .17 bullet is very accurate and fast enough to set off the Tannerite. There were a lot of big booms and a few misses but it was all just for fun.

We shot all the stages in the Old Town, Train, Depot, Wagon, Livery and Corral and all except the Wagon were Stand and Deliver. Whiskey Hayes makes sure we don't have a lot of running in the July and August Matches.

God blessed us with another good day of shooting. The weather forecast was for 60% chance of rain and all we had were overcast skies and a light sprinkle that might have lasted 5 minutes.

Cumberland Drifter was the Top Gun of the day followed by Papa Dave, Reno Mustang, Shaddai Vaquero, CW Knight, Ocoee Red, Kid Ziggy, Dodge City Dixie (also Ladies Top Gun), Randy Saint Eagle and Will Reilly rounded out the Top 10.

Dodge City Dixie was the Ladies Top Gun followed by Alchemist Belle, Doc Kay B May and TN Missy.

There were several trying to work toward the Eagle Eye Award this match. Clean Shooters included CW Knight, Deadwood Miner, Frank Buckshot, Papa Dave, Papa Oso and Sheriff Frank Canton.

We had one new shooter, welcome AO Bittles.
We had no rain, some cloud cover and a breeze sometimes. 26 Cowgirls, Cowboys and Wild Bunch shooters came out for a good day of shooting.

We shot the Gallows with Ben T Iron posting the fastest time with a 27.80. Randy Saint Eagle shot the Line Shack in 23.57 for the best time. Cumberland Drifter bested Graftons with a time of 17.73. The best time at Wells Fargo Bank was 23.74 by Randy Saint Eagle and Dodge City Dixie had the best time at the Cantina with a 20.90.

Ben T Iron was the Top Gun of the day, followed by Cumberland Drifter, Dodge City Dixie (Ladies Top Gun), Reno Mustang, Randy Saint Eagle, Alchemist Belle, Scrub Oak Willie, Garnet Gal, Grey Horse and Big Six Henderson rounded out the Top 10.

Dodge City Dixie was the Ladies Top Gun, followed by Alchemist Belle, Garnet Gal, Doc Kay B May, TN Missy and Ara Tiest.

For the Wild Bunch Branchwater Jack Had the fastest stage time at the Gallows with 37.69, Graftons 20.03, Wells Fargo 25.27 and the Cantina 33.69. Papa Dave bested the Line Shack with a 21.79.

Branchwater Jack was the Wild Bunch Top Gun, followed by Jagged Rock, Papa Dave, Dirtwood Dobber and Demented Frenchman rounded out the Wild Bunch Top 5.

Complete Scores

The posses were small so I don't think anyone was able to get any pictures or videos.

Dodge City Dixie hosted Wartrace's first Ladies Only Shooting Clinic, with help from Reno Mustang, Cumberland Drifter, Branchwater Jack, Donald Duke and Randy Saint Eagle.

Ladies participating were Alchemist Belle, Garnet Gal(both experienced shooters who also helped) Ara Tiest, Georgia Dew, Sassy Sally, Ricochet Ruthie and Vicki Cothron.

Immediately following the conclusion of the Match we had lunch provided by Dodge City Dixie and Alchemist Belle with help from the other ladies, Ara Tiest made some really cool cookies shaped like guns, cowboy boots and cowboy hats. While in the air conditioning we touched on Safety and Sight Alignment. Then we moved to the Livery Stable for the shooting portion of the clinic.

We started by having everyone shoot a stage and thanks to Papa Dave for loaning us his printing timer. Everyone got a print out of their stage time. After some discussion on stance, grip, sight picture and hold we worked on some 1 shot drills with pistols and rifle. Here is where I must apologize to Vicki for not realizing sooner the problem she was having with the rifle was due to the fact she is left eye dominant and right handed. Thanks to Branchwater Jack for the loan of his shooting glasses with the left lens taped over. With those she was able to hit her targets with no problem. Next time we'll remember to check eye dominance before we begin the shooting portion.

After the 1 shot drills and some discussion on transitions everyone shot the same stage again and I think most everyone shot a faster time with some cutting their time more than in half. It was really great to see the smiles when they shot so must faster at the end of the clinic.

I hope all the ladies enjoyed this as much as Dixie, Reno and I did. Hopefully we can have a slightly more advanced Clinic next time and be able to spend more time on gun handling and transitions.

Thank you to Dixie for thinking of this and asking me to be involved, also to everyone who helped and especially to the Ladies who participated.

It's too late to get there now but the World Championship is going on this week.

Side match day started out a little rough for me, they do all the speed events in one bay so you can load pistols, rifle and carry your shotgun and do all three back to back. Rifle and pistols went ok but when I loaded my shotgun it refused to go bang. I thought maybe I had pulled the trigger after I opened it so I started over, still no bang. Fortunately I had my back-up shotgun and it worked fine.

I ran across Widder, Slater, Rounder,Purly, Two-Step Net, Three Cut, Key Hay and a slew of other folks we I first got there. After a few runs Iron Maiden and Whiskey Creek Johnson came up and Iron Maiden and I decided to try the couples match. We thought they need at least one all duelist couple to try it. It was a lot of fun and we had what I though was a real good run. Time rolled around pretty quickly for the 4 stage warm-up match and I met up with Dodge City Dixie and Reno Mustang on my way to that bay.

They have big bays and set up 2 stages in each bay. I think the 4 stage warm-up was shot in bays 5 and 6. I've shot at places where they did this and it was sometimes confusing but here they do it right. They typically have 1 type of common targets but 1 stage starts on targets on the left and the next starts on completely different targets on the right. It works out real well and saves a lot of walking over the course of a day. Most of us were hoping we got all the gremlins out during the warm-up match. On the last stage my back-up shotgun failed to fire the second barrel on the first 2 targets but worked ok after that.

The entire week prior to this, the match weather forecast was terrible, but it just goes to show the Good Lord enjoys a good Cowboy match as the weather turned out great.

Here they shoot 2 posses together, I was on 17 with Ramblin' Royce, Loco Linda, RJ Ricochet, Nunn Faster, Reno Mustang, Dodge City Dixie and Cherokee Maddog. We were shooting with posse 18, Barbwire Ben, Hoss Blocker, Swift Stoney, Kid Nama, Tom Bullweed, Ridgeback Jack, Dollar Bill Newman, Whiskey Creek Johnson and Iron Maiden. One posse would work while the other shot and it worked out well, we had a great group.

I started the the day with a miss with my left pistol but managed to shoot the rest of the day pretty good for me. I even managed to shoot stage 9 with 10 pistol, 10 rifle and 4 shotgun, with pistols and rifle shot from one location and shotgun from another, in under 20 seconds. I managed to finish the first day with a 23 second average. We shot the afternoon wave so it warmed up quite a bit before we finished but it was a nice day.

Saturday morning we shot the early wave and the weather was warm early so I'm sure the afternoon posses had a scorcher. Elm Savannah came out Saturday and helped with our posse all day, keeping the score sheet and taking videos, thanks Elm for all your help.

I started the first stage of the day jacking out a rifle round and jacked out I think 4 before the day was over. I've had better days. After Saturday my average went up to 27 seconds. We had some really good shooters on our posse, Dodge City Dixie and Swift Stoney both shoot really good matches.

I really enjoyed being able to shoot a match and spend lots of time with family so I can't say how the banquet was but I hear it was really good.

Christian Mortician was the Top Gun of the Match, followed by Red River Ray, Three Cut, Swift Stoney, Doc Pill Filler, Linden Kid, Sixgun Sallie (also the Ladies Top Gun), Earl E. Bird, High Noon Henry and Big Whiskey rounded out the Top 10.

Sixgun Sallie was the Ladies Top Gun followed by Shamrock Sadie, Dodge City Dixie, Ms. Jewell and Kid Nama rounded out the Ladies Top 5.

Here are videos from the Shoot-off from Dodge City Dixie and Reno Mustang.

From Wartrace, Dodge City Dixie was 1st Ladies B-Western won the Ladies Shooting Costume award and made the shoot-off, Reno Mustang was 3rd Senior Gunfighter and I was 1st Senior Duelist and won the Speed Pistol Duelist side match.

I have to thank JM Brown and all the crew for putting on a great match and I plan to return next year.
Hopefully Dodge City Dixie, Reno Mustang and I will bring some more Wartrace Regulators with us next year.

Next travel match on my agenda is the Black Gold Shootout I'm sure it will be another great one.

59 Cowgirls and Cowboys rode into Wartrace to enjoy this beautiful day and help stop an Indian uprising, capture a killer, stop a train robber and stop a crooked gambler.

As is our custom we started with the Safety Meeting given by Papa Dave and Whiskey Hayes welcomed everyone including at least 4 new shooters, Pilgrim Joe, Tic Toc, Yankee Gal and Nash Vegas. Whiskey also told us that most of the Motel rooms in Tullahoma are booked, there are some in Manchester and Shelbyville with the ones in Shelbyville being closer to the range and Banquet facility. If you're planning to shoot the State Championship you better book your room soon.

State Match Application

We had a Prayer and Pledge and headed to our starting stages and got to shooting.

I was on Posse 3 with Sheriff Frank Canton, Buxom Boo, Dirtwood Dobber, Elk Creek Le Mieux, Fort Knox, Cody Kid, Echota Kidd, Tyrel Cody, Stones, Raildog Pete, Jagged Rock, Grey Horse, Tic Toc and Demented Frenchman.

We started at the wagon where we single tapped the 2 outside targets, double tapped the 3 inside targets and single tapped the 2 outside targets, grabbed the shotgun and shot the 4 shotgun knock downs, placed the shotgun on the down range hay bales and shot the targets with pistols, same as we did with the rifle.

At the Livery we started in the doorway with rifle staged on either barrel, pistols holstered and shotgun staged on the center table gun order was shooters choice. At the beep rifle shot from staged location engage the center target with 6 rounds then single tap the other 4 rifle targets. Shotgun from the center table 4 KD's in any order. Pistols are shot with same instructions as the rifle.

The Corral was a shotgun only stage with shotgun staged on trough shooter standing at trough. At the beep you alternate single taps between the 2 Texas Stars, there were only a couple on our posse that did it with only 10 shots.

Next we headed to the Train where you began standing in the coal car with hands at low surrender, pistols holstered, rifle staged on the coal car or engine shelf and shotgun staged on the other, gun order was shooters choice. At the beep pistols shot from any location, double tap P1, 6 on P2 and double tap P3. Rifle shot from staged location same sequence as pistols. Shotgun from staged location shoot the 4 KD's in any order.

We finished up at the Depot where gun order was again shooters choice, pistols holstered, rifle staged inside or outside of Depot with shotgun staged at opposite location. Begin standing in side door facing downrange with hands on door facing, at the beep Nevada sweep the 4 rifle targets, shoot 4 shotgun KD's and Nevada sweep the 4 pistol targets.

The stages were fun and and easy enough but with ample opportunity to screw up it you weren't paying attention.

5 shooters were able to shoot the match "Clean" including Hatchie Kid, Marshall Too Tall (who did it shooting Outlaw), Purly, Sgt Jasper and Tabasco Jot.

Cumberland Drifter was the Top Gun of the day followed by Hurricane Charly, Purly, Ocoee Red, Tabasco Jot, Sgt Jasper, Will Reilly, Papa Dave, Duck River and Vaquero Jake rounded out the Top 10.

Papa Dave started us off with a Safety Meeting and Whiskey Hayes updated us on the passing of Blue Boy's wife and Imis Twohofon's mother, please keep these cowboys in your prayers.

Jagged Rock offered a prayer and we recited the Pledge before the posse lists were read and we headed out to start shooting. We had 3 posses today.

At the Cantina we started standing at the center table with hands on holstered pistol butts, rifle staged on table and shotgun staged in either window. At the beep pistols shot from the table, alternate single taps on the 2 outside targets for 5 rounds and dump the remaining 5 rounds on the center target. Move to the shotgun and shoot 2 knock downs, move back to the center and shoot the rifle with the same sequence as the pistols, then move to the other window and shoot the remaining 2 shotgun kd's. On this stage I thought it would be better to dump 5 on the center rifle target and the alternate the 2nd 5 shots. The spotters thought that was such a good idea they gave me an extra 10 seconds added to my time for thinking of it.

At the Jersey Lilly we started at the center window with pistols holstered, shotgun staged at this window and rifle staged in either end window. Pistols shot from the center window in a 4-1-1-4 sweep, rifle shot from where staged in a 4-1-1-4 sweep and then move back to the center window for 2 shotgun kd's. This was my best stage, I didn't try to rewrite it.

The Fort was a stand and deliver stage where we started with pistols holstered, rifle and shotgun staged on the center table and hands touching the table. Gun order is shooters choice except rifle can't be shot last. With rifle engage the 2 rifle targets with 5 rounds each, shotgun 4 kd's in any order and pistols single tap the 6 pistol targets with 10 rounds engaging each target at least once.

In the Jail pistols are holstered, shotgun is staged in the office window and rifle staged in the cell window. You could start at the office or cell window with gun order shooters choice, rifle not last. With shotgun from staged location shoot the 4 kd's in any order, rifle from staged location shoot a 9 shot Nevada sweep on the 3 rifle targets and with pistols from the cell window shoot a 5 shot Nevada sweep on 3 targets and repeat instructions with the final 5 shots.

At the Mine Shaft we started standing between the posts with rifle and shotgun staged on the center table. You could start pistols or rifle, shotgun had to be last. Pistols shot from left table triple tap the center target and single tap each outside target, repeat instructions with 2nd 5 shots. Rifle from center table shoot rifle targets with same instructions as pistols. With shotgun engage 4 kd's from the center table then move to the left table and engage the last 2 kd's.

It was good to see so many shooters including some I hadn't seen in a while like Cherohala Chase and Will Reilly.

Hikes Point Hank was the Top Gun of the day and this is the first time I can remember a Gunfighter being the Top Gun, in fact there were 3 Gunfighters in the Top 10. Hurricane Charly was 2nd followed by Cumberland Drifter, Purly, Dead Lee Shooter, Ben T Iron, Randy Saint Eagle, Pleasant, Will Reilly and Black Jack Lee rounded out the Top 10.

9 shooters shot the match "Clean" including Ben T Iron, Buxom Boo, Dirtwood Dobber, Frank Buckshot, Hikes Point Hank, Nantahala Ned, Pleasant, Reno Mustang and Whiskey Hayes.

Complete Scores

It turned out to be a great day and a fun match even though I struggled on all but 1 stage.

It's time to plan some travel Matches and the Georgia State Match is coming up May 14-16.

There was some question about a call yesterday and the TO made the correct call but I thought I'd address it to help clear up any confusion. Shooter finished shotgun, grounded it and drew pistol, TO yelled hull as there was an empty not fully out. Shooter hesitated then completed course of fire, reached down and removed empty hull. Minor Safety was called, some thought a no call because hull was removed before shotgun was set down at the unloading table, I wanted to add this from Shooters Handbook for clarity.

17. Long guns will be discarded with their actions left open and the
actions/magazines/barrels empty at the conclusion of each shooting string. A 10-second
minor safety penalty will be assessed if the firearm is not cleared and opened. This condition
may be corrected prior to the next round being fired. If the long gun is the last firearm used,
it must be cleared prior to it leaving the shooters hand(s) at the unloading table. This does
not apply to guns shot out of sequence, made “safe” and then restaged. If the action of a long
gun closes after being discarded open and empty, the shooter will, at the conclusion of the
stage, show it to be clear to the TO or a spotter. Appropriate penalties will be applied if it is
not clear. No one other than the competitor may handle the gun in question. See RO-I for
further clarification.

This is from the RO 1 course.

Minor Safety Penalties
• Not leaving a long gun action open at the end of the shooting string or before the next
firearm is fired.
• Leaving empty or live rounds in magazine or carrier of the long gun in which it was
loaded.

I hope this helps, here is a link to the rule books if anyone would like to check them out.
Papa Dave started us off with our Safety Meeting, Jagged Rock offered a prayer and we recited the Pledge.

We had 2 posses and shot the same stages as the Main March Cowboy Match, Papa Dave modified them as needed for the Wild Bunch folks. Posse 1 started at Grafton's where we started at either window holding a whiskey bottle in both hands. Rifle staged in either window, shotgun staged in opposite window, pistols holstered. Gun order was shooters choice, rifle not last. At the beep with rifle shoot 3 rifle targets in a 3-4-3 sweep, pistols shot per rifle instructions and 2 shotgun kd's. This was my best stage.

Next at the Outlaw Cabin we staged rifle and shotgun on the center gun shelf and had pistols holstered. We started standing in the doorway with hands touching the door frame. At the beep we moved to the center and shot the rifle in a 4 target progressive sweep, 1-2-3-4. Then 4 shotgun kd's and finished with pistols shot same as rifle. This is a sweep I really like but it was my worst stage.

At the Gallows we staged staged the rifle on one shelf and shotgun staged on the other and pistols holstered, gun order shooters choice, rifle not last. Start standing beside either shelf with hands on hat and at the beep shoot the rifle in a 1-2-4-2-1 sweep on 3 targets, pistols were shot in the same sequence as the rifle and 2 shotgun kd's.

Next at Wells Fargo rifle and shotgun were staged on the center gun shelf, pistols holstered. Begin standing in either doorway hands on door frame, gun order shooters choice rifle not last. At the beep with pistols shoot a 5 shot Nevada Sweep on 3 targets and dump the second 5 shoots on the center target, rifle shot same as pistols and 4 shotgun kd's.
